Chapter 1

Everyone rushed out the door as the bell rang signaling the start of the summer holidays.

I grabbed my bag and walked over to Jess,who was clearing out her locker.Jess and I have been best friends since we were babies.Yeah we had our fights now and then but she was always there for me.

Mrs Kennedy glared at me as we walked out of school.I stared back and quickly stuck my tongue out at her.Her eyes widened then narrowed into a icy glare. Mrs Kennedy despised me and she didn't try to hide it.All year she has been coming up with any reason to get me in detention.

I hugged Jess before she got on the bus.Jess was flying to France tomorrow with her family for two weeks.

"Make sure you bring me back something cool"I said.

" You sure you'll be OK?Ring me anytime you need me"

I rolled my eyes ,typical Jess always worried.

I waved and started to walk home.Jess was so lucky she was going to France! Her family was really well off though.

I shut the door to my house and ran upstairs to listen to music.I plopped down on my bed and stared at the ceiling.

There was a knock on the door.It was my mam.She sat on my bed and stared into space.I studied her face,all the years of stress and tiredness could be seen on her face.I tried to think back to a time she didn't look so empty,but that was years ago.

"What?" I asked quietly.

She looked up as if just realising I was there.I felt a slight twinge of hurt.

"I need time to myself.I'm sending you off to your Uncle in California for the summer".
