As I walked through the door a gush of wind hit me. "Hey," I said as I saw my three closest friends sitting at a table. "Sorry I'm late, I chatted with Cal and Amanda for a little while."
"No problem," Ed stood up, giving me his seat
"Thanks." I smiled while he pulled up another chair
"I can't believe your going to 4P Central tomorrow, it's so crazy! And I'll be going in two months! Wow how time flies by." Georgie pointed out
"I know, it feels like just yesterday I was leaving my F1. And now I'm going to prepare to go to my F4!" I jumped in. We then continued to share old memories from our F1 experience.
"I remember the time my 1P's got there second placement and it was there first boy, I swear they ignored me for the whole week!" Lara laughed recounting the memory "And now, I'm going to be doing the same thing as a Host with Jal." Lara was placed with her F4 a couple months ago and got matched with her husband, they decided to get married and move into their own house as soon as possible."What do you hope to be assigned to Kenna?" Ed asked looking at me
"I hope to be in the scientific department, I would really want to be a developer, but you can only hope." Developers modify the baby during the Mothers pregnancy and when the Mothers give birth decide wether it's a Mistaken or Right.
"I could never do that," Georgie said quietly. "If the child was a Mistaken, I could never ever kill it, ever, I don't care if it's not good enough, it's still alive and human."
"But that's the thing, they wouldn't be Right, they would ruin our society." I protested. "They need to be illuminated." I glanced at all of them, proving my point.
Ed spoke up, not making eye contact with me. "I have to agree with Georgie on this one, they're still human." I rolled my eyes at him.
"Let's not get into fighting, we are here to say goodbye and best of luck to you Kenna." Lara spoke up breaking the argument.
We talked for the next hour and said our goodbyes. Edward walked me home. "I'll see you in a couple days miss." He nudged me.
I smiled "Yeah, and we'll be able to celebrate your birthday at the Central together."
"I'd like that."
"See ya then Edward Still."
"Goodbye Kenna McGuire."
When I went inside I walked straight up to my room, not trying to be noticed by anyone, when Lucy caught my arm. "We have something for you." She laughed and pulled me downstairs to the kitchen. "It's nothing big, Sam and I pulled it together while you were gone, we got the book on how to make it last week from the library." There on the kitchen table lay a birthday cake with a single candle in the middle of it. It was covered in chocolate frosting and I could see specks of vanilla cake underneath it.
"I love it Lucy." I said choking back the tears.
"It's the nicest thing anyone has done for me in a while." She smiled at me pleased that I liked it.
"You were supposed to wait for me to get home before you showed her!" Sam came in storming through the door. He is the toughest six year old you'd ever meet. "Happy- almost birthday Kenna!" He said when he saw me.
"Thank you both so much." I scooped them into an embrace. "I'm gonna miss you guys so much."
"I love you." Lucy whispered
"Hey, no you don't." I scolded her. Love was a forbidden feeling in Newfort. Our government viewed it as a 'distraction.' And I could not agree more.
"I know, I know. I really like you and I'm gonna miss you a lot." She corrected herself
After we devoured the cake I made my way back to my room and fell on the bed and fell asleep. I woke later to the doorbell ring. 'The pizza man' I heard someone shout. Great, I thought, this is my last meal here. I rolled my eyes and headed down stairs. I grabbed my food and went straight back to my room. I wasn't up to talking to anyone anymore. Plus I needed to write someone a letter.
