Purely by the look in her eyes, Lian could tell exactly what Holly was thinking. They stared awkwardly at each other for a while, both with gaping mouths and confused looks in their eyes, until they slowly began to turn around and ignore each other, Holly brushing a stray piece of hair behind her ear, as they realised Miss Horrocks was staring at them contently, holding up the entire lesson. Hot flushes spreading across both of their faces, they put their heads in their books, unsure where to look apart from at each other. Everyone else was just staring straight forward, knowing they shouldn't cause any shit with their history teacher unless they wanted their head on a stick.
Holly and Lian had a weird history. They'd known each other since the start of year 7 and had clicked instantly, even though they had very little in common. They would argue like a married couple constantly, bickering like nobody was watching. Holly towered over the small girl when they strolled next to each other in the overly crowded school hallways. A few weird glances had led to another and they had, once upon a time, fallen in a quick and rather foolish love. Spending every single day with each other slowly started to drive them crazy. Arguing may see innocent to everyone watching but it tore them both apart, slowly, so much that no one seemed to notice. Around their friends and classmates, they acted like they were still friends, and would spend endless weekends with each other. They would walk for hours and it was moments like this that made everything worth it. The arguing. The secrets. The confusion.
Spring drifted into summer and that into a crisp winter, and they had been together for around 13 months now when it all seemed to go bad. Things with school had been stressy since the start of year eight, and they had been more agitated around each other as usual. Lian couldn't take it anymore and snapped. She couldn't take Holly's constant complaining and the fact that she had a stronger love for Call The Midwife than she ever actually did for her. But, Lian actually had the courage to say all of this to her face, not through some text, she was stronger than everyone presumed.
They were walking and reached the tree they had their first kiss under. Lian didn't realise where they were, she just wanted to get it over and done with. Gently pulling their hands apart, she stopped walking, looked down at the ground and began to kick around large bunches of leaves, all in different harmonizing colours.
"Lian?" Holly spoke quietly, almost choking on her own words. Lian stayed silent, full with fear, not wanting to look Holly in the eyes. Holly's irises were surrounded by a ocean of emerald green and enchanting blue, like her pupils were small, dilating islands, their beauty only available to a few. Lian finally looked up, after Holly repeated her name several times, slowly getting louder and slightly more aggressive each time. Both of their eyes had slowly started to fill up with tears, even though the worst bit hasn't yet come. Lian's glasses misted up as she whimpered.
"I can't do this anymore Holly" she gulped loudly, terrified of the tension growing between them. "This is too much to handle." she continued, watching Holly shake her head, denying that this was actually happening.
"You are fucking unbearable. I can't balance you with all this school work. All you ever do is fucking complain". Holly wasn't even looking at Lian anymore, just down at the ground, like Lian previously was.
"I don't understand" she stuttered slightly, trying to make herself oblivious to what was going on. Taking a step forward, Lian takes one back. Holly's long arms reach forward and pull Lian close, seeing tears well up in her eyes. She strokes Lian's smooth cheeks and a memory came flooding back, unable to control.
*** They'd been lost in each other's eyes for a while, not wanting to look anywhere else but study each others faces and admire their perfection. They begin to speak but it all goes as a blur. They discussed their future together on a daily basis and that's what was happening right now. Holly stroked Lian's cheek as she spoke of their wedding day and Lian held onto her hand, never letting go for a second*** (a/n thanks medinah)
She cries even harder, Lian trying to push away, but unable to fight against Holly's hidden brute force. They look at one another for a while, but Lian's glasses were misty so Holly couldn't see the beauty of her eyes for one last time.
"I'm sorry" Lian murmurs, pushing Holly off for a second time, and this time succeeding. Holy just stared, biting her lip, trying to hold back the tears, denying what she is hearing. Lian turns around, walking off, not saying another word, even though she knew she would see Holly on Monday and things would be awkward. Holly turns in the other direction. The weirdest thing for her was, as soon as it happened, the only person she wanted to talk about it to was Lian.
They thought no one knew, but everyone was able to tell, even since the very beginning and their hard attempts to pretend they weren't making out every weekend.
This was mainly just a backstory for Lian and Holly's previous relationship. It will end up making sense, i hope... Thank you Medinah for making a cheesy flashback, i added to it but it was really funny for me. I'm going to immediately start writing the next part, this is gonna be fun. I didn't reach my 1000 word goal but oh well!
