I woke up to the sound of machines beeping, and a blinding white light surrounding me. After a few minutes, I was finally able to open my eyes.

I was in a hospital room.

As I sat there silently, a nurse walked in, and looked shocked to see me awake. She gasped and ran out the door yelling “Doctor! Doctor! She’s up!”.

After a few minutes, a man whom I assume is my doctor, and the nurse came back in.

“Hello Miss Andersen, I’m Doctor Johnson. How are you feeling?” He asked as he checked over my vitals and chart.

I tried to reply, but no words came from my mouth. My throat felt dry and unused and I sensed that the doctor could tell what was wrong, cause he motioned for the nurse to get me some water. As soon as the cool water went down my throat, I felt better.

“Much better.” I said, my voice horse from not being used for a while. “I’m okay. Sore, but I bet there is some type of pain medication in this IV.” I pointed to my arm.

He laughed “You would be correct. That was quite the scare you had Miss Andersen. What all do you remember happening?”

“Um…I had been walking, and it was raining.” I said trying to remember fully what happened. “I walked into the street after looking both ways, but I guess I didn’t see the car coming.”

“I’d say you were pretty lucky. Most people would have died or been seriously injured, but you only received a couple broken ribs. Your neck and back might be sore, but for someone who just got hit by a car four days ago, your very lucky.”

“Wait, four days? I’ve been out of it for four days?”

“Yes. I’m just do a few little tests and check ups on then we can talk about getting you discharged.”

I sat there and silently went along with what the doctor told me to do. Four days. I wonder if Paul had ever found out. I doubt he would care though.

“Ok Miss Andersen, I am going to write you up a prescription for some pain pills, that should help. Some of this is really basic stuff, no heavy lifting, limited exercise, try to keep of your feet for the first few weeks, and just a couple other things that will be written in your discharge papers. You should be able to leave tomorrow morning. Is there anyone you need to call?”

“No, no one.” I said sadly.

“Okay then, I’ll leave you alone to rest. There is a television remote on the table next to you, and if you need anything else, don’t be afraid to call in a nurse.”

As soon as he walked out and shut the door, I slumped back and stared at the ceiling. This is just great. My boyfriend breaks up with me and then I get hit by a car. Can it get any worse? I closed my eyes for what felt like only a couple of minutes, when a knock on the door startled me.

“Hello?” I said as the door opened. A man dressed in a formal suit with brown hair stepped into the room. He was carrying a briefcase, but had a slight causal look to him.

“Miss Andersen?” He asked. I sat up as straight as I could. I nodded. “I’m Adam Williams.”

“Oh hello. What can I do for you Mr. Williams?”

“I am here on behalf of my client, Mr. Matthews.” A confused look crossed my face. He sensed my confusion. “Um…Mr. Matthews is the one who…hit you with his car.”

“Oh, and what can I help you and Mr. Matthews with? Wait, is he suing me for damages to his car? Look, I didn’t mean to! It was raining, and I couldn’t see, and…” Mr. Williams cut me off.

“Miss Andersen, please calm down. No, Mr. Matthews is not suing you. He asked me to come down here, because he thought you might sue him. He told me he is willing to do whatever or give you whatever he can to make it right. Name your price.”

“Nothing.”

“Excuse me?”

“I don’t want anything from him. It was an accident. It’s not like he did it on purpose.”

Mr. Williams had a shocked look on his face. He must have not thought I would deny Mr. Matthews offer. “Are you sure? There has to be something he could do to make it up to you.”

“The only thing I could want is to see if he could arrange a ride home for me tomorrow. I don’t have anyone available.”

“Of course. Anything else?” He still must have been waiting for me to take up Mr. Matthews offer.

“That’s all.”

He stood slowly, “Well, I’ll get a driver set up to pick you up, and let the front desk know. I’ll let you rest now.”  He turned to walk out the door.

“It was nice meeting you, Mr. Williams.” He turned around and smiled at me.

“You too, Miss Andersen.”
