Prolouge -

The dazzeling lights shone against the darkness of the night with a light of their own, every color that could ever be dreamed of burst forth from the scene giving the winter night an air of happiness and joy despite the bitter cold and the deep blanket of snow that layered the ground. The many lights reflected onto the glistening white with breathtaking beauty.

The sound of Rag Time music floated trough the air as yet another round of Scott Joplin's " The Entertainer" began again, blaring from loudspeakers as it was forced to play once more on an ageing record player. Hoards of people both old and young dashed from stall to stall uplisted in spirits by the jovial music and the season joy that seemed to surround the carnival.

Children shrieked with glee as they rode like kings on the hard back of a brightly painted metal horse; bobbing up and down amidst the sea of smiling faces.

Everybody is attracted to the magic of a carnival, very few can resist its pull, the bright clours , the laughter of children as they marvel at men 10 feet tall, the sweet smell of candy floss and other such delicacies that people both old and young adore.

A young girl of about ten years was no exception to this, drawn by the sheer happiness of the scene before her she bounced up and down with excitement, her electric blue eyes wide with amazement contrasted startlingly with her straight, raven black hair and porcelain skin. With her parents on each side of her she grabbed hold of their hands, so as not to lose herself in the masses of people, and began to rush them in every direction, she seemed intent on visiting every single event before the night was out.

After hours of fun, the girl sat with her parents on a bench , the red paint dull and peeling away from the wood with age, gave an ominous creak as she shifted her weight. Unable to contain the excitement within her. She and her father sat huddled together over a bag of cotton candy, with the sticky sweetness smeared around his mouth, her father looked up at her and gave a wide grin showing a row of pink teeth. Erupting into a fit of giggles the girl doubled over with laughter clutching at her stomach as she struggled to stay upright in her seat. Her mother simply rolled her eyes at her husband's antics as though she was long used to his behaviour, however, the smile playing around her lips and the sparkle in her eyes gave away her amusement.

"Honestly Christopher !" she said, "Don't encorage her, you know she's already hyped up enough as it is. She'll he sick !"

"Oh come on Juliet" he whined playfully in reply, "We're allowed a bit of fun aren't we? Please? I promise i'll be responsible later." By this point, in a dramatic jesture, he had fallen down onto his knees before her and batting his eye lashes with a pout on his handsome face, obviously trying to embarrass her.

It would be obvious to any passer by just how in love this couple still was by the way they gazed into each other's eyes and at Chris' childish teasing, the faint blush that was appearing on Juliet's cheeks gave the couple the look of newly weds in their twenties rather than late thirties.

"Get up Christopher," she said in exasperation, "And do grow up".

"Grow up! Me?" He cried in mock outrage, "Why my dear Juliet, I'm wounded by your cruel words"
