Listen... Do you hear them?... Listen...
"Dad, what's for dinner?" I called out. "Food." He yelled back. I sighed. My dad made the worst jokes. They weren't even funny.
"I'm serious."
"I'm Dad, nice to meet you." I groaned and got up from the living room couch, where I had been trying to do homework, (but mostly just ended up staring off into space) and stomped into the kitchen. I put my hands on my hips and glared at him, while he laughed.
"I'm sorry sweetheart. I'm only joking. We're having lasagna."
"Mm," I smile as I inhale, "Smells delish." My dad might make bad jokes, but he's one of the best cooks I know. "Well, it's almost ready, so go wash your hands, and set the table. Then you can help me."
"Ugh, fine." I say, but I'm smiling. After I did what I was told, and helped dad, he brought out a steaming plate of lasagna. He set it down in the middle of the table, then grabbed a large knife and cut the lasagna into manageable slices. He grabbed a spatula and served me a piece, before scooping some onto his own plate. I had washed lettuce leaves and cut up tomatoes, gotten slices of cheese, and made myself a drink of lemonade, while dad grabbed himself a beer from the fridge. We sat down at the table and I started to dig in.
"So sweetie, how was school today?" Dad asked. I shrugged.
"Meh. Same old, same old, really. Nothing interesting." I reply.
"Well, how was your science test?" My dad knew everything about what was happening at school, in my social life. He made it his job. He still has his day job as a chef down at the local restaurant, but he always knew everything that was going on with me. Sometimes it could be annoying, but mostly it was fine.
"Oh, it was fine. There was only one question I struggled with."
"And what might that question be?"
"Daad." I whined.
"I'm sorry! I just wanted to see if I could help you!" He holds up his hands defensively, and I giggle as I see a bit of lasagna hanging out of his mouth.
"Dad, you're a messy eater. And, no offence, but I don't really feel like you're the most qualified person to be giving me help on my Science work." My dad isn't really the Science type.
"Well, I'm sorry for offering." He says with a fake pout, after cleaning up the stringy lasagna hanging from his mouth. I smile. My dad knows how to cheer me up.
"Don't worry dad. I'm sure I did fine." He grins.
"I'm sure you did too."I finish up the last of my lasagna, (I'm a fast eater) and take my plates over to the sink. I give them a scrub, and leave them in the drying rack.
"Oh, Jasmine, there's a special treat for you in the fridge" my dad says with a sly look on his face. I open the fridge to see a bowl of ice cream in there. I grin. My dad even got Cookies and Cream, he knows it's my favourite. I skip over to the table and give him a hug, before running back to the fridge and grabbing the ice cream. I swipe a spoon from the cutlery draw and head off to my room.
"Just don't spill on your carpet!" My dad calls out. I smile.
"I won't!" I shout back.Closing the door to my room, I wander over to my speakers and hit play on "Somewhere I Belong" by Linkin Park. (I'm a big fan, I also love The Amity Affliction) I sit on my bed and eat, listening to the music. When I'm finished, I run out and grab my school books from the lounge room. I sit in my room, staring at the sentences and equations in my maths book, before I realise that it's pointless, my mind can't concentrate. So I set my school books on my bedside table and grab a novel I've been reading, called "Take Me Away." It's by a woman called Cecilia Opalman, and I love her writing. She's very talented, and makes me feel like I'm there, watching this scene in front of me. "Take Me Away" is about a girl named Kiara, who lives an ordinary life, until one day, when she meets a mysterious boy named Angus. It turns out Angus is secretly an angel and a lot of mystery ensues. Kiara and Angus fall in love, but they can't be together, as they're from different worlds. It's really lovely and mysterious. I open to my marked page and read. I read, read, read. I read for an hour. And longer. (I am a huge bookworm incase you couldn't tell.) As I read a dramatic scene in which Kiara is fighting off a horde of Hellhounds who have come for Angus, dad calls out that it's time for me to go to bed. I sigh, and mark my page.
Turning off my music, I change into my pyjamas, and walk off to the bathroom. After brushing my teeth, and plaiting my hair I head into the study where my dad is browsing the web on his computer. I peck his cheek and say goodnight, then wander back off to my room. I flick off the light and lay down under the covers. I stare at the dark ceiling for a long time, rolling over, waiting. Looking at my clock, I see that it's 10:00. As if on cue, I hear them. Wolves. Howling. Mournful noises that fit perfectly into a sad harmony. Listening to them, although I can't see them. In the woods next to my house, sometimes it feels like they're so close, at arms reach. Slowly, I drift off to sleep.
