Soon, friday came round, I got dressed as usual. Went to class and hung out with Dan afterwards.
"So, what's so special about this game?" I asked Dan.
"It's the big homecoming game! Everyone who is anyone is gonna be there!" He replied.
"Sooo.... I guess I'm someone?" I asked, laughing.
"Well, you are to me." He replied.
"Thanks Dan."
"Hey, d'mention it, but I can't hang out after school today, we have to get ready for the big game tonight. I know, you should come and watch!"
"Sure! I'll come!"

After school I texted mom telling her I was not coming home till late. I sent her the results of my scan and went to watch Dan's practice. Libby was there also.... she walked over to where I was.
She had a slightly sad-stuck up look on her face.
"Hi..." she said.
I didn't say anything, I just looked up, my gaze meeting hers. She sat down beside me on the bleachers.
"I see you're feeling... better." I finally said.
"...Yeah... better.... look... I'm sorry... about......"
"It's fine..." I said, holding up my right hand to her face.
She slowly moved my hand out of the way... I glanced at her with a cold look on my face.
"Look... I don't know what came over me that day. I guess I was... just... jealous.... jealous of you and... Dan. The thought that he has moved on from me..." she said. I could tell she was sincere in her apology and that it actually meant something. I still kept my guard up just in case. Lets not forget this...thing tried to kill me!
I mustered up something to say.
"Well, just remember that if you try something like that again, it will get even uglier for you. I don't know one hundred percent what is or has been going on with you and Dan, but I'm not getting into it." I replied.
Libby got up and walked away.
I looked down at the football field and saw Dan in his football gear waving at me. I waved back, leaning forward in my seat just a bit, a smile on my face.

Four thirty came round and practice was over. Dan met me on the bleachers.
"The game doesn't start till seven, we got some time to chill." He said, happily.
"Wanna go get a bite!?" I replied, happy at the thought of getting to spend more time with my best and only friend.
"Sure! Burger Prince is right down the street. Lets hit it!"
"Shouldn't you change first?" I laughed.
"Oh yeah, duh. Meet me in the front of school in ten."
"Ok, better be there!"
We split and met up at the designated place. We walked to Burger Prince having a good time along the way. Dan never fails to amuse me. We soon arrived at the restaurant. It was one of those fast food chains. Dan held the door open for me and let me go in front of him.
"After you." He said, bowing. I giggled in amusement.
"Ok, so I have never been here before, what should I get!?" I asked.
"WHAT!? You have never been to Burger Prince?" Dan asked in shock.
"Idk," I said, confident in my lingo, "Maybe mom brought some home and I just never noticed. Food is food to me."
"Then of course, you have to have the King burger! It's the biggest burger this side of.... this side and Burger Prince's specialty! Three patties piled high with your choice of extras, and they don't charge for the extras. I'll even pay!" Dan said with enthusiasm.
I paused for a moment to look at the menu.
"I'll take... two." I said.
Dan and the lady at the counter looked shocked.
"Uhhhh, three King Burgers..." Dan said, nervously handing the lady his card.
"You sure you can pay?" I asked with a laugh.
Dan put a smug look on his face.
"Well, when you are a star running back-"
"But I thought the Quarterback was the star?"
"Ahh, you do know about football! You got me. I do get as much publicity as Jak Latham to be honest."
"True, so true."
I got two burgers piled with bacon, lettuce, cheese and tomato. The food smelled so fresh, I began to wonder where it had been all my life.
We got our food and went back to school where we ate on the bleachers of the football field. Dan watched in amazement as I devoured the two burgers like it was nothing. He was utterly speechless. I let out a slight belch, covering my mouth in cheeky embarrassment.
"Ooh, excuse me.... what? I haven't eaten much today, ok?" I said, reaching to take a fry from the giant fry we were going to share.
"Wow.... just... never seen it before..." He said, his eyes fixated on me.
We hung around till six thirty. It was then time for Dan to get ready for the big game.
"So glad you're here Connie." He said with a smile.
The seats were packed, people everywhere. The game was long, and drawn out. The Portaville high Mavericks won that night in a triumphant victory! A short girl with olive skin walked over to the podium on the stage-like platform at one edge of the field. Night had arrived and the crisp air smelled fresh. The girl spoke into the microphone, her voice loud and proud of what she was doing.
"And now, before we close... IT'S TIME TO ANNOUNCE YOUR HOMECOMING COURT NOMINEES!!! When I call your name, please join me upfront here on stage."
The crowd erupted with glee.
"For homecoming king and queen we-"
She went down the list for each grade, starting from grade twelve. I didn't really care about it much at all, but when she got to grade nine (mine) I couldn't help but listen. There was a giant monitor above the stage-like platform, showing the faces of those who came up as nominees.
"First, we have Bobby Myniss and Valerie Sorine!"
A tall, calm boy walked on stage to join the others. He had a slight smirk on his face. The girl soon joined him, waving and blowing kisses to those in the audience, her boisterousness kinda scared me. The crowd was hard to silence. I was beginning to get bored.
"Next, give a hand for Britney Darford and Ike Drummid!"
Again the crowd erupted.
"Finally... we have.... DAN MARKUS AND LIBBY TREMMEL!"
I was so happy for Dan, couldn't care much for Libby. The two of them joined the group of smiles and flattered egos on stage. I just wanted it all to hurry up and end so I could get out of the crowd, say bye to Dan, and go home. It was going on ten o'clock.
"Now, give a huge hand for your HOMECOMING COURT NOM-" The announcer girl was interrupted by a voice from the stage, fighting through the crowd of egos to get to the podium.
"Excuse me, coming through, pardon me, don't mind me, pretty important, thanks for understanding."
A head of blonde hair emerged from the crowd, stumbling in front of the podium. It was Dan! Every eye in the area must have been on him. What was he thinking?! If this was some sort of a publicity stunt...
"Um, yeah, I know I'm at the bottom of the food chain, being a freshman, but I actually have a few words to say... or ask..." Dan said.
"Um, sure... Dan." The girl said as she stepped away from the podium, giving Dan the floor she had a look on her face as though Dan had stolen her thunder and she was not amused.
Dan stepped up to the podium, the entire crowd silent except for a few faint mumbles. His face shown shiney with sweat on the monitor. His face was marked with football face paint and dirt marks, his hair a jagged and messed up wig from wearing his helmet. He leaned into the microphone.
"Yes, um, there is a someone in the audience... aw forget it, Connie, will you be my date to homecoming!?"
He looked dead at the camera after speaking such words. The crowd erupted in oohs and ahhhs. Libby stomped her foot on stage in anger. The mumbling grew in size. I slowly stood to my feet, dusting my skirt off. Dan looked at me, I looked at him... I felt a spark. I separated my lips and prepared my tounge, bewildered and shocked beyond belief. I didn't have to look around or use any of my enhanced sensing abilities to know the entire crowd had their eyes drilled into my skin.
"Yes!" I said, "YES!"
The crowd erupted. Their voices riding on winds of cheer. Dan's face turned from red to a giant smile. The boys on the football team all ran on stage to congratulate their teammate.

After the event drew to a close and everyone had gone home, I saw Dan on the field, by himself. He stood there, his gaze meeting mine. I walked down the flight of stairs and onto the field. I stood there under the moonlight, I knew I wasn't supposed to move for some reason. That strange feeling arose again on the top of my stomach. Dan took one step, then another. His face grungy and his gear matched. When he finally came to where I stood, his arm wrapped around my waist, bringing me closer to him. I could feel his heartbeat after all of the excitement. Like a kickdrum. I lost the feeling of mine, drowned out by his. He looked down at me, I looked up at him. The lights of the field dancing with the moon light from above. Quiet. Our faces inched closer and closer, my eyelids slowly began to meet. Our lips began to mesh as we kissed. The two of us, lost in our own little world. A message, a memory I would carry on my heart forever.
My first kiss. My first love.
