My name is [name], and this is the story of how I found love.
Oh, don't be so dramatic! Just tell the story how it is!
Fine fine, where should I start?
It always struck me as funny how love can make the worst days into some of the best things to ever happen to you. It was a dreary day, as funerals usually seem to be. The sky was almost colorless. Just pale clouds against a gray sky. Everyone was dressed in black, the universal monotone color that marks the death of a loved one. The ceremony was short, only about 20 minutes, maybe more or less, but it felt like an eternity. Seems the way of things when your mother dies. I was 23 years old, living on my own, wild and free, when I got the call. My mother had gotten cancer. Real bad, they said, adding that I had to come quickly. She died about a week after I came to see her. Up until then I was by her bedside constantly. She was only about 60 then, far too young to die, and in great physical and mental health up until then. She was really the only family that I had left. My father had left when I was very young and my grandparents had both died so me and my mother were alone. We were alright, living in a small house in the Georgian countryside up until I went to college.
The funeral itself was beautiful. There were white lilies everywhere, her favorite flower. She had always admired their beauty, so the planners only thought it fitting to include them. It was set outside in a wide, flat plain covered in grass with nothing but dirt roads for miles. Me and my mother would come here and pick flowers when I was young. We lived far away from anybody under the age of about 50, so there were never any other kids to play with. I had asked if we could have the ceremony here, and they surprisingly said yes.
You're probably wondering where the love comes in, right? Well, we had just sat down for the ceremony and I was looking around at the sea of black-clad people, many of which I knew, when I saw her. She was beautiful, her white-blonde hair just slightly waving down her shoulders and her eyes sparkling in the sunset light. She was wearing a necklace with only one tiny diamond charm on it, subtle but beautiful all the same, and her dress fit her perfectly. I guess I stared for a bit too long, because she turned to face me and smiled, her perfect white teeth gleaming and a small dimple forming on her cheek. I awkwardly smiled back and turned to face the minister.
After the ceremony, I saw her walking up to me and she smiled again. I smiled back as she began to speak.
"You're [name], right?"
I couldn't think of anything to say, everything had suddenly slipped my mind.
"Y-yes," I stuttered, "that's me."
"So that must have been your mother, then."
Her voice was like honey as her face looked sympathetic.
"Yes, it was."
She smiled again, but with more sadness this time, "I'm so sorry, this must be hard for you."
"It is. May I ask your name?"
"Oh, yes, my apologies!" She laughed it felt like the sun shined just a little brighter, "I'm [name]."
"[name]," I repeated, "That's beautiful."
She blushes a little and tucks a stray hair behind her ear.
"I've got to get going," she says, turning to leave, but I stop her.
"Wait, may...may I get your number?"
"Sure!" She smiles enthusiastically and whips out a piece of paper, "Oh goodness," she says, "Would you happen to have a pen?" I nod and hand one to her out of my pocket. She proceeds to write down a phone number and grins at me, "I'll see you later?"
"Absolutely," I reply as she walks away.--------------------
