"Darling, we have to go into town to get your things. There are some very peculiar items on this list: The Monster Book Of Monsters by Edwardus Lima. Hm, I wonder if it actually is a monster book. Honey?"
"Mom," Nova groaned, "we can't just go in to town for my things. We have to go to a place called Diagon Alley, or something like that. My friend Kayleigh told me, she's in third year like I will be. And also, if it is a monster book and there is people I don't like then I'll just -" Nova stopped speaking as soon as her mum gave her a stern look. if looks could kill, she'd be dead a long time ago. "Kidding."
Nova got dressed into a black skater skirt, with her Weird Sisters band tee and her pale blonde hair up in a sleek ponytail which was bonded with a floral hair-tie. She didn't bother with make-up that day. She decided that she had to get used to the idea of ditching her dark make-up which dulled her bright blue eyes and to lay off of the eyeliner. Nova was descending the staircase when her brother, Tommy, bumped right into her going upwards.
"Watch where you're going, jerk" Nova spat, causing her brother to stick his middle finger up in her direction, which she returned. Walking in to the kitchen, her father was reading the Daily Mail and her mother was preparing breakfast.
"Omelette, dear? Nova's mother asked her father,
"I don't mind if I do, Anne. Oh, not again. Another criminal break out. A known notorious killer, Sirius Black ... Is that it? They're not going to say how many he murdered? No number, Just name then, Huh? What news England has for us, we will never know the full -"
"He killed 12 people."
Her father and mother looked at her in somewhat mixture between confusion and shock, as though she was behind the murders too.
"It was in the Daily Prophet. You know, the wizarding newspaper?" Nova said grimly. Her parents often forget that she's a witch. Her father's a muggle and her mother had magical relatives ("He was my great great great . . . Grandfather, he once turned his daughter into a tortoise because she kept running away from the villagers so they would just think she's his pet, apparently) so the gene from her mothers family had been passed on to her, and she turned out to be magic.
Her parents both silently realized this again and started talking among themselves as Nova sat in the living room, waiting for the time to go to Diagon Alley, which will be her first time since moving to England. The minutes slowly ticked by until her mother called her name pulling on her coat and picking up her bag, purse and her fathers' car keys ("Don't scratch her, Annabeth!") and stepped outside, Nova at her heels.
The drive to London was exciting, but long. Travelling from the north all the way down to London had costed them a lot of time. Nova had ordered some things from Zonko's Joke Shop in Hogsmeade which (surprisingly) weren't quite funny at all, until she set off a Dungbomb on accident ("I wonder what this does- why's it smoking? AHH!) But later when she cleaned it all up off of the windows and their clothes, the both of them then joked about how never to set one off in the car- or anywhere else for that matter.
"So," Nova's mum started, "where do we go from here?" the two of them had pulled up in front of an old looking building, looking like a run-down pub or store with dusty windows and an old tattered door. At least, that's what it looked like to Nova.
"Are you sure we're here, hun? it's boarded up, there's no way-" her words were cut short when a large deep purple bus with three floors came to an abrupt stop in front of them with a short boy climbing off of it, carrying a suitcase and a snowy white owl. There was a man standing outside of the pub wearing a bowler hat with an unusually wide smile on his face when the boy stood there, looking confused as to what was going on.
Nova caught a glimpse of the name 'Harry Potter' and a heavy feeling of excitement jolted in to her stomach. Was she really about to see Harry Potter even a couple of days before going to Hogwarts. Nova began to walk slowly towards him unaware of her actions and before she could stop herself the man in the bowler hat became more recognizable as the Minister Of Magic.
"Oh, um, hello..." stuttered Nova, as her eyes slowly began to creep up the boys face, first seeing a wide smile, then dazzling green eyes, then flicking to the scar on his forehead and back down again.
"Hi," Harry said unexpectedly, "are you looking for Diagon Alley?" Nova nodded, feeling relieved to knowing what she was there for in the first place before being distracted.
"Ah, my dear child I don't think the stores will be open at this time," said the Minister, "however, Gringotts will be open very early in the morning. Would you care to stop the night-"
"I'm incredibly sorry, sir, but we can't. You see," Her mother started, "we've traveled all day to get here so we really must be going." She stood her ground and hiked up her hand bag upon her shoulders and began to turn around when the Minister tapped her shoulder.
"The Leaky Cauldron will be happy to accommodate with my words," He said looking directly into Nova's mothers eyes as though putting her into a trance. "If you don't have your bags I shall send some Ministry Officials to collect them and bring them here for dawn. What do you say, Miss...?"
"Mrs. Cross, and- what do you mean 'Ministry Officials?" Her eyebrows contracted together with a confused look.
"I'm guessing your mum is a muggle, yes?" The minister asked Nova, who nodded and slightly blushed.
"Well, let me introduce myself. I'm Cornelius Fudge, Minister Of Magic and by the way you reacted, you didn't know of the Ministry?" Novas mum just nodded with a hint of amazement, a little gap between her lips creeping into a smile.
"Well," she started, "I'm guessing you would need our address?" But Fudge shook his head at this.
"We're already packing your things now, Mrs Cross, Including your daughters necessities for Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft And Wizardry."
"You're going to Hogwarts?!" Asked Harry, who had just been listening to the conversation, as was Nova. She smiled and nodded; she was already making friends from Hogwarts, and the first was Harry Potter.
