CHARLEY'S POV
School, I have found out, isn't nearly as bad as I thought it was. It's Wednesday and Mason, Robin, and James are the best people I've ever met. James is a lot like me and is very smart. Robin is a girl with short temper but is very pretty. Mason sticks up for all of us and is really strong. My favorite time of the day is activity time. On Mondays we have P.E., on Tuesdays we have art,in addition to my saxophone lessons, on Wednesdays we have music, on Thursday we have computers, and we have free time on Fridays. I love art and I'm really excited for music. Derrien had taught me some fingerings and spent the full afternoon helping me to perfect one pitch. She is a very good teacher. Though, Ms. Daskinal, is a terrible teacher. Sure, I learn plenty, but teachers are supposed to understand how we think and are supposed to embrace curiosity. On Monday afternoon, James asked our teacher,'"Why do bears hibernate instead of migrate in the winter?'" And she responded with,'"Shut up, how am I supposed to know everything?'" I tried to tell Demi about this, but she was too busy with work.
Demi has a new body guard now. His name is Max and he is really nice. He knows how to make pancakes and how to keep Demi from burning the house down. I still miss Jo, though. From my understanding, he's not coming back.
"Shut up, class! I am going to take roll!" I doze off because I'm the fourteenth person to be called. I study a note Demi had put on my bag. It looks like this:
Have a good day at school!
I love you!
-Demi
I recognize her name and the word school. That's all. I study the letter longer than I think, because soon enough Ms. Daskinal says,"Charolette Cunningham. Presen-Wait, what is that?" I try to hide the note, but my teacher comes up and snatches it from me."Have a great day at school. I love you. Demi. Ha!" She scoffs as she reads it aloud. Everyone laughs except my friends and a few other boys. I look down at my note book and try not to cry.
"Awwww.... Your mama loves you! How sweet." She rips up the paper. I can't take it anymore. I shout,"Why do you hate me?!!!" The classroom falls into silence.
"I have done everything right. I have turned in all my work, studied everything, and it's only my third day of school, yet I understand everything you are teaching." My teacher is frozen in shock. I soon hear Robin shout,"She's right. You're cruel to us! You said I spelt my name wrong because I put a heart over the 'i'!"
Soon, everyone in the class is shouting. I just sit there, proudly, and glare into Ms. Daskinal's putrid eyes. Then I whisper,"You're not a very good teacher."
"THATS IT! CHAROLETTE! GO TO THE OFFICE!" I hesitate, at first, but decide I should listen. I stand up obediently and my friends follow my notion. As Mason passes, he spits on Ms. Daskinal's shoes. Robin smiles and holds my hand. We all walk out the door, full with courage, to stare at each other.
Finally, Mason speaks up,"What do we do now?" I shake my head and go over everything that just happened. I just misbehaved. I feel like crying, but no tears will come. I notice that I'm boiling with anger. I look around and see we were joined by a boy with brown hair. I look to James for help and we seem to shoot mind messages. He nods and I turn to face the four of them.
"We are going to walk into that principal's office and get our teacher fired. She shouldn't be this mean to us. Not one of us have acted up until six minutes ago."
Mason smiles along with James and Robin. The boy with brown hair looks at me in approval."That's a good idea. I'm Noah." I nod at him and smile. Robin says,"I'm Robin Zarfield, that's Mason Karlile, this is James Gufferson, and she is Charley Lovato." Noah waves at all of us and we all walk side by side down the hall.
Some fifth graders and older kids stare at us and I swell up with pride and courage. A few of the kids point at us and whisper. I ignore the ones who snort and laugh at us. Soon, we approach the office and march to the front desk.
"Yes?" Asks the surprised old lady at the desk. "May we please speak to Mr. Matthews?" Asks James. The lady lowers her glasses,"Why?" Robin snaps at her,"None of your bees wax."
I stifle a giggle as the lady pouts and points to our principal's office. I open the door and usher all of my friends inside. We all stare at our shocked principal with brown hair and crinkles.
"Wh-" I interrupt him,"Mr. Matthews. We were sent here by Ms. Daskinal. I am sorry to have interrupted your day, but we have important business here. Our teacher, Ms, Daskinal, needs to be fired immediately." Mason smiles at me and holds his thumb up. Go Charley.
Mr. Matthews voice seems slightly amused,"Why should I fire her?" Here's my chance. "Because this teacher pushes away questions instead of embracing them. She scolds curiosity and points a finger at creativity. I am here, along with my friends, to tell you we can't stand it. You see, Mr. Matthews, it is only my third day here and this lady has treated me no higher than rotten milk." I take a deep breath and stare out the window at the trees swaying. I brace myself for scolding or punishment. Instead, I get laughter.
"Wow. I thought I was the only one who felt that way. Well, young lady, you sure do have a way with words. And you're only in kindergarten! What are your names?" We all introduce ourselves and smile at each other. After a few minutes of discussing everything, our principal decides that he will do something about our teacher.
On the way out, Mr. Matthews whispers to me,"Can I get your mom's autograph?"
I just laugh and walk away.
