As the late-afternoon sun beamed down on my unprotected skin, I let my aching mind ponder over last night's events. Had I done the right thing turning down Jim's offer? Did he have a right to be so moody with me even though he knows why I did turn him down? Did he know why I did turn him down? Did I even know why I did turn him down? Damn this overload of unanswered questions was not mixing well with the piña coladas from earlier that day.

"How have you not burnt without sunscreen?" Maddie complained as she rolled over to let her back catch some sun and she wiped a few grains of sand away from her eyes.

I shrugged my shoulders as I leant over Sam to grab a can of Coke. We had left for the beach at roughly ten in the morning, it was now five and we hadn't even considered going home. The best thing about the beach by Kyle was that it wasn't rocky and horrible like some other Welsh beaches; it was one hundred per cent sand for the most part (other than a collection of large boulders further down) and, thankfully, today had been surprisingly hot. Maybe even hot enough for a slight tan if we were lucky.

Jim and Kyle were playing volleyball by the shore and the number of times Jim had 'accidentally' hit it straight at my head was higher than a few cocktails could excuse. Sure I may have embarrassed him the night before, but were the frequent attempts to decapitate me really necessary?

The sound of my phone vibrating against my towel interrupted my thoughts and I smiled once I saw who the text was from. Danny. He was Maddie's neighbour when we were all little before he moved to Wales in year eight. He was one of my closest friends and, I couldn't deny it, I had always had a slight crush on him when we were younger. However he was now completely off limits as he was no longer single and his girlfriend, Olivia, judging by the Facebook pictures, was possibly even hotter than Sam. Possibly.

                Danny: Hey, you in Wales?

I laughed aloud earning a few confused glances from my best friends. How the hell did he know that? Neither Maddie nor I had put it on Facebook…

Me: Yeah, haha x How did you know?

Once it had been a few minutes and he had still not replied, I put my phone on silent and placed it carefully inside my cheap, bubble-gum pink beach bag that somehow seemed to be carrying more sand than the Sahara desert. Stupid beach. Stupid sand. Stupid bag.

"We still haven't been in the sea yet," Sam commented out of the blue, her dark hair was slightly tangled and her face completely stripped off any cosmetics. How did she look nice without makeup when Maddie and I looked like crap? That's so not fair!

I nodded my head in approval and sprang up onto my feet whilst Maddie let out a loud moan before hesitantly standing up and showing off her new bikini. The three of us had all gone shopping for holiday clothes the other week and, although the two of them bought hot, revealing bikinis, I stuck with a plain navy and white striped tie-up that showed off just the right amount of cleavage.

"You girls look hot!" Kyle grinned in approval eyeing us all up and down. Whilst Maddie and Sam straightened up with a smile to show off more of their fabulous figures, I felt my cheeks grow warm. I hated it when people talked about my body, they could look at it all they wanted but talking about it was off limits. Maddie and Sam were both curvy but slim whereas, thanks to countless hours of swimming and athletic training, I had quite a sporty figure and was more toned and skinny- leaving much to be desired in the 'figure' aspect of my body.
