Shelby's P.O.V.
To many, the ticking of watch brings a sense of dread, the classic noise of a horror movie as the dumb girl hides in a horrible spot and inevitably bites the dust. To me, the gentle sounds of the seconds falling off the clock are quite calming, the hands stroking the soft face of the clock as the time slips off the Earth's surface. I suppose I've always had a bit of a fascination with watches and clocks. I could watch them for hours. Time had no sense of presence with me-other than if I'd have a bad day tomorrow because I'd stayed up a bit too late the night before. Now, it's all I could think about.
I had only so long before these creatures would break down the barriers.
How long could I fight before I gave?
How long do I have to live?
"Babe?" My head snapped over at the sound of an accented voice, meeting Louis' eyes.
"Hello." I greeted. "What do you want, mister?"
"Your body." He smirked as my eyes went wide.
"That's...nice. What rational thing do you want?"
"What part of that made me irrational?"
"The sex part. HA HA HA no. Help me down." I whined, reaching downward.
"How'd you get up there without knowing how to get down?" He chuckled, gripping my waist and cradling my small figure to his.
"I knew perfectly well how to get down." I smirked. "I'm simply lazy."
"We may be the last living on Earth, but you still can't help yourself down from the car." He raised an amused eyebrow.
"I thought you loved me." I pouted, tilting my head to the side for good measure.
"Don't start." He chuckled, kissing my nose. I looked away quickly to hide the soft pink I felt on my cheeks. That's why girls like make-up... Huh.
The camp had gotten off on a great start-everyone was happy just to be alive and with people they knew, and the park seemed safe-the casualties were minor at the time, just a few kids that had been walking home or anyone else on the streets. They tried to break through all night-the horrid screeching actually drove someone clinically insane. And after the...defensive attack, we put the bodies-shot in the head, good an lethal-along our boundaries. Facing away-it was hard to look into the eyes of someone you couldn't save. This spreading sense of fear, dread, and misery overwhelms you, and you just want to R U N. Run as far as you can. Which, of course, it's not safe out there.
We started with 37. We're dwindling at 21. 8 people. 8 faces that won't ever smile again. Won't ever talk, or kiss, or whatever. They will EAT. They will CONSUME any human being that dares cross their path. I can't let that happen.
"Yo righteous leader." Veronica, one of our unfortunate saves, sneered. "Someone else is dead."
"What? Who?" Louis put me back on my feet, staying close to me.
"YOU. Everyone re-voted, re-voted for ME! And my first declaration of leadertude is to throw you OUT." A pair of girls that had decided to follow her around like lost puppies forced snarky giggles.
"Okay...there is so much wrong with that sentence, factually and grammatically. But nice try." I huffed. She tried to keep her cool when I smirked, driving her insane.
"You leaving or not?! I'll throw you out if I have to."
"Do it then."
"APOLOGIZE, YOU DUMB BITCH!"
