Officer Louis pulled up to a small apartment building, something that must've been built in the 60's or 70's. Brick held up the rough exterior, gleaming in the cop cars headlights.

Officer Louis looked back at me, smiling she sighed and said a phrase I've only heard once before in my whole life.

" you're safe now."

My breathing stopped and I looked at the building in front of me.

"She'll tell them to find me- or they'll figure it out when I'm not seen for a few days" I stated in one long breath.

Officer Louis looked away from me and sighed before proceeding to get out of the car and come around to open the door for me.

"This place is what I would consider under the radar at this point in time. It serves as a training center for boxers, but I think this is one of the safest places in Chicago."

Giving Officer Louis a confused glance I stumbled out of the car and looked upon the building in front of me.

"You think that they'll let me stay here? You think they'll pick up anyone but boxers? You're crazy nobody wants to get involved with this kind of stuff, once it gets out this place will be full of people like me and then torn down brick by brick."

The words tasted like iron in my mouth. The bitter truth.

Officer Louis laughed slightly at my comment, winning a confused glance from me.

"Carter, this isn't a safe house, you're right about that. But trust me, they won't be able to refuse my offer, I'm friends with the owner and I think we can work out a deal."

Officer Louis began to walk towards the entrance of the old apartments, and even though I didn't want too, I followed her in.

Pictures plastered the walls.

Rocky

UFC fighters

Group picture's

Christmas card's

Family pictures

I was invaded by the sound of music and boys laughing. I cringed slightly but tried my hardest to snap out of it.

Why was I listening to this women. She knew nothing about my life.... I think....

Maybe I don't have much of a life to know about.

As we ventured further into the lobby a door with the word CHIEF on a golden plack drilled into the door. A grin formed on Officer Louis's face as she knocked on the door.

"What the hell do you boys want, you know that I'm trying to get some food down before I do my group training with you little cøcks." the voice inside the room answered in angst.

"its Anna, open up" Officer Louis said, the embarrassment in her voice obvious.

The person behind the door was silent but by the scrimmaging and the loud attempts to clean up you could tell he was surprised.

The door opened and a man appeared: he was tall and masculine, must've been in his late 30's, but you could barely see the wrinkles and his hair was just peppered with grays. The man looked upon Officer Louis as if she was his long lost love.

And she looked at him with the same expression.

"You said if I ever needed a favor, I could come to you." she muttered

"Um-ah, of course Anna, yah what's up?" he asked nervously.

Officer Louis brought her eyes over to me and smiled. The man looked me up and down, confused as hell.

"I need you to take her in. Train her. I'll pay for her room but I can't afford it all without Ben getting suspic-"

"Don't talk about him. Not under my roof." the man spit out, looking me up and down. " I don't train woman, its my number one rule now."

He turned his back but before he could close his door Officer Louis yelled "This is her last hope Kevin, she has no where to go and I won't put her back in foster care! She's a 17 year old girl who is a punching bag for someone now you listen to me! She will work, she will clean. She will be quiet as a fly but if its not here than I don't know what will happen to her!"

Kevin turned around, a crowd of fit young men had started to form in the lobby, watching us closely.

Kevin looked down at me and I could feel the emotion in his eyes. He didn't want me to die but he didn't want me here either.

A sigh left his lips and his hands went through his hair as he said " fine. She can stay, but on one condition: she must train like all the others, no one is treating her differently because she's a girl" he stopped and looked at the crowd " and if you boys do anything to this girl, AND I MEAN ANYTHING, you will be eliminated from the program and not have a chance to compete at Chicago Underground."

The room was dead silent, Kevin's eyes fell to mine and he held out a hand.

"I'm Kevin Lanbridge. But everyone calls me Chief, its nice to meet you..."

"Carter." I whispered

"Its nice to meet you Carter."

Chief looked to Anna "Can we talk in my office? I'll have Kiral to take Carter to her room"

Anna nodded and then looked to me "I'll come find you before I leave, we can talk logistics and what you will be doing with your time here other than boxing" she smiled sweetly at me and made her way into the office.

Kevin looked around the room and made a hand gesture to a figure I couldn't make out. Soon after a boy emerged from the back of the crowd.

He was tall, slender face, very young but not a teenager. He had olive skin, and long dark hair that came just above his shoulders. His most defining features would probably be his eyes. Green like leaf that would bloom on beautiful flowers.

He was gorgeous.

Yet he was cold as ice.

He looked at me and did nothing but gesture towards the stairs that led out of the lobby. As I followed him I earned some cheeky grins and glaring eyes, my presence brought nothing but mixed signals.

Climbing the stairs we finally made it to what I could only assume was my room.

His hands were rough, throwing open the door with no effort.

"Well here you are...." he said, trailing off.

"Um.... Thanks.... I appreciate it." I thanked him shyly, my fears of living in a home with all boys creeping up on me.

" its not a big deal. Just be careful. Next time you see me I won't be easy on you."

"What do you mean?"

"I was asked to train you, and I won't go easy on you because of what you've been through or because you're a girl. You are here too box and that's what you'll do."

With that he was gone. I sat on the soft bed and felt my heart sink in realization.

This was a new reality that I didn't know could be possible, and wasn't sure how I was going to live with some freedom.

But just because I was safe for now didn't mean it would be permanent.
