As the radio had said, it soon started raining. Cuinn and Ally had been pretty much silent after hearing the report. Ally seemed to be thinking. Cuinn didn't know what to do so he pulled his small backpack over to him. It was the only thing that he was able to grab before they went on the run. He had stuffed several things in it, like books and a camera, even some food. He pulled out a granola bar and bit into it.
Ally suddenly spoke up. "Something doesn't seem right about this murder."
Cuinn spoke up, his mouth full. "What do you mean?"
"It just doesn't feel right... I feel like I should know something about this."
Cuinn contemplated it. "Could it be another monster thing?" He shivered, thinking of a second Lich.
Ally didn't answer his question, as she had gone back into her state of deep thought. As she thought, he heard her mutter something about crossroads.
Even though it was against his better judgment of hiding until he wasn't as much of a wanted man, Cuinn sighed as he said, "We could go look into it."
Ally broke from deep thought again as she looked up at him and nodded slightly before standing up.
Cuinn joined her and they headed out of the building into the rain.
They walked for awhile and, once they were thoroughly drenched, they found themselves heading into the nearby college campus's library.
"Maybe we'll find something here..." , Cuinn said as they passed through the security gates.
______________________They had just sat their reading books for several hours and no one seemed to recognize them. Cuinn closed the book on strange murders he'd been reading and put it up. He looked around in the reference area soon finding a book called The Dictionaire Infernale. He looked at the back of the book.
"Your comprehensive guide to creatures of hell and demons."He took it back to where they had a few books and Ally was intently flipping through books rapidly. As he sat back down, Ally looked up at him.
"I have no idea what it could be..."
Cuinn sets the book down.
"Would this help?" He asks her.
She quickly looks through it. "Crossroads... Crossroads... Ah there we go... Crossroads, in many mythologies, represent a place where worlds touch or are extremely close. They are commonly used as ways to summon beings or used by beings in order to cross into the mortal world."
"So what ever this thing is has something to do with crossroads?" Cuinn asked as she finished talking.
"I expect so."
Cuinn sits at a nearby computer and searches for the locations of the recent deaths.
"All the recent deaths happened at crossroads. I'm betting you're right. So what could be doing it?"
Ally flips through the book. "It could be plenty of things. But these killings were very brutal. I'm guessing a black dog."
She hands Cuinn the book, open to the passage on black dogs. It read, Black Dogs: This is a name often given to a being that resembles a massive black dog, often with eyes that glow like embers, though sometimes are seen with pitch black eyes. These spirits are often malevolent, some even causing direct harm. They are often, but not always, nocturnal apparitions and are often associated with the devil. Often seen as portents of death. See also Hellhounds, Shuck (and all derivatives), yeth hound, etc...
As Cuinn read that, he froze in fright thinking about the large black dog he saw. "I've already seen it..."
