When you craft your wooden pickaxe, you should find a mountain or cave. Use your wooden pickaxe to dig into the stone in the mountain or cave. When you get enough stone, you can craft a stone set of tools. A stone sword, stone shovel, stone axe, and stone pickaxe. But first make sure you have enough sticks. If you don't, then get more sticks. If you find coal (which is stone with black spots on it) you should mine it up because sticks and coal is the recipe for torches. You will need torches to see in the caves and monsters in the caves. There are varieties of ores in caves. There are Coal, Iron, Gold, Redstone, Lapiz Lazuli, Diamond, and Emerald for the regular Minecraft game. For some mods they include Copper, Tin, Silver, and Bronze.

When you craft your wooden sword, you should hunt animals for food which will be raw at first. Pigs give some raw porkchops, cows give a lot of raw meat and leather, sheep give one block of wool but no food, and chickens give feathers and raw chicken. If you don't cook the food, it will poison you when you eat it, so have a furnace and coal handy for cooking raw food. A wooden sword can also be used to defend yourself against monsters which could kill you if you don't attack them.
