The mane six, minus the element of loyalty, stepped into said element's home with worried expressions. Their friend had not left her home for an entire week and that just wasn't like her, so they decided to get to the bottom of it. They found Tank, her lovable pet turtle, standing guard outside her room with a somber expression on his face as he slowly raised his head to stare accusingly at them.
"Is anyone else getting the feeling that maybe she doesn't want to be disturbed?" Applejack asked hesitantly as Twilight raised her hoof to knock on the door. The others gave her dark looks and she stepped back a hair and lowered her head sheepishly. Twilight was the one to break the oppressing silence draped over them.
"We're all worried AJ; what if she's hurt? We have to at least check in on her." The lilac mare reasoned. The others nodded in agreement, some more hesitantly than others, and Twilight knocked on the door, only for it to slowly creak open. The room was dimly lit and Rainbow herself was seated by the window, staring out of it with puffy red eyes that spoke of long sorrows.
"The day I got my cutie mark, it was the same day I lost my mother..." Rainbow dash looked at her friends with a distant expression and Fluttershy's eyes grew misty with tears as it dawned on her. Rainbow was grieving for the loss of her mother and the mark of that loss would forever haunt her. Her very core, the pony she was meant to be, would always be a constant reminder of her loss.
"She came to see my race for Fluttershy's honour... She was gone before I could even land..." Rainbow dash whispered softly, her thoughts going back to her kind mother's peaceful expression and her father's heartbroken sobs as they stood over her cold body. The feeling of dread overtaking her as the adrenaline wore off and horror consumed her. Her previously blank flank was marked and that mark would serve as a constant reminder of her foolishness. Her filly self hadn't understood at the time, but Rainbow did now. That if she hadn't asked her mother to attend the race, then she might still be alive...
"What happened to her?" Twilight asked softly, moving closer to the distraught speedster with a careful step. Rainbow's head jolted up to look at her, as though just having seen her for the first time.
"She was in and out of the hospital my whole life... They said she was terminally ill; she would never recover... She was so kind and thoughtful though; even when she was on her worst of days, she was always thinking of everypony else. The day of the race, I asked her to come and watch. She came by just as I was starting and when I finished, I came down to her and father, only to find that she had left us. Father told me that her final words were that she was proud of me... I never even got to say goodbye..." Rainbow's eyes filled with tears and her friends came close, wrapping her up in a tight group hug, each with tears in their own eyes as well. Looking into the room from above were two magenta eyes.
"I'm still proud, my little rainbow..." The ghostly image of a beautiful mare smiled down from the clouds as she looked down upon the scene. Her mane shimmering with the dying twinkles of lost stars, her wings carefully tucked into her sides, and her coat the purest of whites. She shed a single crystalline tear as she looked down upon the group of friends. The tear taking shape on the small chandelier hanging from the ceiling as a small white dove. She flew off without another word, a single white feather drifting down to the group of friends, settling on the floor beside them as a gift. A soft whisper in the wind reached Rainbow's ears, the whisper of a loving mother, never to be forgotten.
