She'll always decorated her desk for Halloween. Bats, sinister teddy bears, a witches hat, jack-o'-lanterns, and a mechanical black cat with an arching back put us all in the holiday spirit. We liked the black cat best of all. If had a motion detector in it, so everytime someone walked by, it gave off a creepy, high-pitched "Meow". Some of us played with it so much that the constant "Meowing" got on other peoples nerves. To accommodate those who hated that meowing cat, Shelly would turn off the motion detector. But after a while, someone else would always turn it back on. Finally, she removed the batteries. The cat perched silently on her desk, waiting and watching for Halloween

It had been quiet Halloween night at the library. No one player any mean pranks like setting the book drop on fire or dumping soda in it. By 7:45 the library was pretty empty. We figured that most people were out trick-or-treating or attending a party.

At 8 o'clock we eagerly secured the library, checking the bathroom and between the rows of books, making sure we didn't lock anyone inside . No one wanted to return to the dark library to let a patron out, especially on Halloween night.
Rose and I were the last to leave. We lingered at the open back doors discussing the day's events in the glow of the loading dock lights. Then we heard a faint noise in the workroom. It sounded as if someone was clearing there throat. We stopped talking: our ears tried to tune into the strange sounds drifting out of the dark workroom. We heard soft shuffling, footsteps, and then a distinct "Meow" coming from the cat on Shelly's desk.

"Whoa, what was that?" Rose looked at me. Her eyes were wide in disbelief. "Didn't Shelly remove the batteries from that thing?"
Nodding slowly, I stared at her. "Rose," I squeaked, "let's get the hell out of here." We slammed the door behind us, shutting in whatever it was that made the black cat with no batteries "meow".
I started my car and began backing out. But I couldn't resist one last look at the back door. The lights had gone out! "And you stay here, don't follow us home!" I yelled in the direction of the back door. Rose and I sped through the parking lot and out the driveway. I hoped that whatever was in the library would be gone by the next day.

When we told our coworkers what happened to us, they just laughed and called us a couple of scaredy cats. But later on, randy took me aside and whispered, "Did you know that the printer by the men's bathroom will start printing all by itself, even when it's off?
"Does it print anything?" I asked. "I mean, it has a full ink cartridges, right?"
"Yeah, it moves across the page, but it doesn't print anything at all! But don't say anything, okay? I don't want people to get freaked out." With that comment, she walked away. I guess whatever was in the Kaimukī Library is still there after all.
