As the day grew longer Rhian found herself going through old account books her father had stored boxes in the basement. She had to make sure everything was correct, even going through old receipts. Once Rhian finished reviewing old transactions, she wondered what was going to happen to her father's business. Her mother couldn't run it, she never learned anything about how to train or breed horses. One thing was for sure, their father would not leave his legacy in the hands of his two oldest daughters. So who had he chosen to be his successor? Not many days later they found out the details of what was going to whom.
It was just like her father to have everything documented. Rhian's sisters, and mother were summoned for the reading of their father's will.
"I am here to carry out Mr. Robeson's last wishes. In his will, it states that his daughters Temperance and Tamera stand to inherit his two trucks and one-fourth each of his land. If you would like to decline, you'll need to sign this document to make it official."
"You can't sign that paper. Dad worked hard to get that land. We grew up on it. You can't sign that piece of paper."
"Neither of us live in Texas anymore. What are we supposed to do with it? It's useless to us."
"It's not useless! Dad fed our bellies with that land! How could you say a thing like that?"
"Sit down child." her mother said. "It's alright. They are adults, let them choose what's best for them."
"They've always chosen what's best for them, mom."
"Shh. The reading isn't over."
Both sisters signed the documents releasing them from their inheritance.
"Since you both signed these documents, you do understand that this legally binding?"
"Yes, we understand."
"In that case, thank you for your time, there is nothing else left for you to do here. Please step outside."
"Wait." Temperance said, "There's more to be read?"
"Again, please step outside."
Temperance and Tamera looked at each other in confusion but left the room.
"You're Rhian, correct?"
"Yes, sir I am."
"In your father's will, it also states that you stand to inherit a fourth of the land as well. Will you reject your father's last wishes?"
"No. Mother doesn't have anyone to see after her, so I'll have to stay."
"In that case, the will also states that if you accept your inheritance you will not only receive a fourth of land you're promised but also your sisters' part of land if they rejected it, of course. Furthermore, you will inherit, both of his trucks and his business, and also half of his saving he left behind."
"Dad never told me anything about any savings account when I was still living at home. Mom, did you know?"
"No. He never spoke a word of it to me."
"It was put in place before you or your sisters were born before he married your mother. I think this letter will clear things up for you. Your father wrote it a year before his passing, he wrote it specifically to you. There's one more thing about your father's business, he's requiring you to learn the ropes with none other than Trevor McKenna."
"Excu-excuse me?" she stuttered in bewilderment. "My father wants me to be around Trevor?"
"He wants you to learn the ropes. Nothing more, nothing less. Now if you agree with everything that has been mentioned, I'd like you to sign this document saying you fully understand what's been said and that you will be accepting your inheritance."
