The nerve of him! Of all the people she trusted most, he had been the one who'd gone behind her back to acquire her father's business! She ran her fingers through her black curly hair in frustration, then crumpled to the floor and began to cry. Day after day she was left alone in that house crying her eyes out, to the point she made herself sick. Barely pulling herself together, she trudged to her parents' room, and her mother favorite scent of lavender hit her like a ton of brick and the tears welled again in her eyes. She'd always have the image of her dead mother in her mind, how peaceful she looked. At least there was no more pain for her. Sluggishly she dragged herself to the bathroom and her eyes fell upon the empty bottle of pills her mother had sprawled across the bathroom floor. Rhian picked the bottle up, and read it, it was some kind of cancer medication. She wondered why it took her so long to clean up this mess, maybe because she wanted to somewhat preserve the memory of peace her mother had about her. Rhian just wanted to lay down, just for a few more days, she just didn't have the energy to do much else.

When she came to, she found herself back in her bedroom, with another body sitting across from her in a wicker chair. Their eyes met and she turned away and tried to pretend Trevor wasn't there.

"It's time for you to get up."

"Go away." she said in a faint voice.

"Get up Rhian. We have work to do." When she didn't reply, he strode to the bed and ripped the covers off her and started to drag her out of bed.

"Let go of me!"

"I said get up!" Both started to tussle with one another until Rhian ended up in a pool of tears. "This is for your own good. I'm not trying to hurt you."

"You stole the one thing I had left!"

"It isn't the way it seems. You don't know the whole truth. Just give me some time, and I'll explain everything to you."

"Time?! I don't have any more time! You want this house too? I'll sign it over to you! You can do whatever you want with it. I wasted my time believing that maybe you'd see me. Both of my sisters were right, I shouldn't have waited for you, I've been a fool all this time..waiting for you, and for what?! I even saved myself for you! It's so pathetic!"

"You waited for me?" he asked in utter disbelief. Did he just hear her correctly? Did she save herself for him?

"Nothing, never mind." she tried to pull herself up from the floor but Trevor pulled her back down, pushed her on her back and covered her body.

"I'm going, to be honest, so listen. The reason I have control over your father's company is because he wanted me to, he willed it to me, only temporarily, though. That's why I've been at your side dogging your footsteps. He wanted me to teach you the ropes and then hand the business back over to you. He also willed me a lump some of the money. You know no one can coerce your father into doing something he didn't deem necessary, and I never once asked him for any of this. I wasn't supposed to tell you any of this just yet, and your father promised to come back from the afterlife and haunt me for it."

"What?"

"That's right, he threatened me. But he also let me out of a promise I made to him."

"What promise was that?"

"To never touch a hair on your head. He knew that I liked you."

"What?! You what?!"

"That's right, I liked you and still do. No...I love you. Your father was just trying to protect you."

"You wasn't going to do anything to me."

"If I was left alone with you more than ten minutes when we were younger, something most definitely would have happened. I didn't have the easiest time controlling myself around you. Your father knew it and he made me promise to never touch you."

"I always thought my father was being cruel."

"I'm sure it seemed that way. Now we can be together if that's what you still want."

"I'm sorry for accusing you of stealing from me."

"If it was me, I'd probably think the same way."

"Okay! Okay, we can be together, but no more secrets, even if you were threatened to keep your mouth glued by my father, okay?"

"Okay. The first thing we have to do is get you out of this house. I need to teach you a few things. I hope you're a fast learner."

"I am."

"Good." he smiled down at her. "I haven't been idle in the time you were away. You were always on my mind. Just in case you came back, I'd have things ready for you, for us."

"What are you talking about?"

"You'll see when we get back to my place."

In the days that came, she saw exactly what he was talking about, he really had made a life for himself, and for her. Trevor's ranch was huge, he must have employed close to thirty people, to train up the horses, and various of other positions. He proposed to her on the night of a full moon, and on the grounds of his ranch, with a party going on no less. Rhian was surprised beyond belief, she wasn't expecting a proposal so soon and in front of strangers.

A year after their marriage a baby girl was brought into the world. And as time passed they found Casey McKenna their daughter was more like her mother, she was led by her emotions. During the time Rhian sold her parents' home, she found those neighbors came down often seeing as they weren't from Amarillo, they wanted to know the area. And who better to ask but she or Trevor?

"Hi. My name is Casey McKenna. What's your name?" she held her hand out to the boy that lived in her old grandparents' house. The boy just stood there and looked at her, never saying a word. "Did you hear me? My name is Casey."

The boy's mother bent down and introduced her son, Riley, and told her he was five years old just like her. "Do you want to go play? We have lots of games in the house. And sometimes my dad lets me pet the horses. We even have some of our own."

Trevor and Rhian sat on the stairs of their home staring in disbelief, watching their former lives play out before them. Casey will have some tough times ahead of her, trying to crack Riley. All she could do was pray that things ended up well for her. Suddenly a memory came rushing back to her mother. While she was looking out into the distance, the sun was starting to set and she heard her mothers words... "One day you'll understand." Rhian now understood what her mother was trying to tell her, her mother knew time was running out for her, that she could be at peace leaving her children behind. Also, that being a mother was a gift. Melody watched her children grow up strong and independent, but there was always Rhian pushing for more and not settling for less. Now she understood what it was like being a mother, to watch your child grow up, knowing heartache would come to visit. She knew she wouldn't always be around when her daughter needed her the most, but while there is still breath in her body, she was going to make darn sure she was going to be the best mother a child could ever have.
