"So, do you honestly think Sam is gonna help us?" I ask whilst we walk the steps leading to Sam's stoop.
"We don't have any other options."
"Right! So we just walk in and say hey the agency we work for are trying to kill us and it turns out that neo-nazi organization has been secretly running the show behind the curtain, and now we plot to save the innocent and avenge my father's death." I rambled.
"Thanks for being optimistic honey." He quipped.
Being optimistic is not my style.
Steve and I just stood there looking at the elegantly carved pine door.
"So are we gonna knock or stare at the door for 5 minutes." I said.
He lets a deep exhale. I made the executive decision and knocked on the door.
In few moments the door opens.
"Hey man." He says.
"I'm sorry about this. We need a place to lay low." Steve explains.
"Everyone is trying to kill us." I finished.
He stares at both of us and says." Not everyone."
He steps aside and we enter the veteran's home.
"The show is down the hall to the left and I'll see what I can do about your clothes." He said.
"Thank you, Sammy." I smiled.
He reciprocates with smile.
I sat on the edge of the bed in silence starring out into nothing. I can feel Steve stare on me as he leans against the bathroom door frame.
"You okay?" he asks.
I let out a deep exhale and said. "I don't think covers how I feel right now."
He takes a chair from the corner of the room sitting in front of me. He grabs my hand his thumb gently tracing over my hand.
"I thought joining shield was a way for me to get closer to my dad despite my mother not wanting me to become like him, the more I think about it I'm more like him then I thought. "
"I think he would proud of you." Steve assured me.
I let out a soft chuckle.
"You seem pretty chipper for someone who just found he was fighting on the wrong side." I said
"Well, I guess I like to know who I'm fighting for." He said. his optimism is almost annoying at times.
My lips form a small but soft smile. I leaned in until our foreheads touched. I just sit there in silence just enjoying the moment of being with him.
"I love you." I whispered.
"I love you." He spoke back.
Sam cleared his throat. Grasping our attention.
"I made breakfast. If you guys eat that sort of thing." He said awkwardly.
We all convene in the kitchen playing a twenty questions game of who is trying to kill us
"So, the million-dollar question here ladies and gents are who at shield has the authority to launch a domestic missile strike." I rambled.
Steve sterns for a moment and says." Pierce."
"Make sense he happens to sit on top of the most secure building in the world." I said.
"But he's not working alone. Zola's algorithm was on the Lemurain star."
