Whitekit stared blankly at his aunt. Never see Snowfur again? Never feel her soft white fur or look into her loving blue eyes? How could this have happened? Was StarClan angry at him? He saw a flash of white fur behind Bluefur's form. Snowfur! She's alive! He ran past Bluefur only to see his mother lying on the ground, a thin line of dried blood going from her jaws to her cheek.

"You'll share my nest with Brindlekit and Frostkit. I'll give you milk to help you grow." Robinwing was mewing, wrapping her tail around him gently.

He felt a surge of rage. "I don't want your milk or your nest! I want my mother!" He raced over to Snowfur. I can't believe she's gone. "I'll live out here with you." He murmured, burrowing his nose into her fur one last time.

He barely heard Thistleclaw snarling at Bluefur. He was scary when he was mad, and Bluefur seemed to be in too much shock to reply properly. I hope this is just a bad dream. He poked himself with his claw until it hurt, but it wasn't a nightmare. Cats swarmed around the camp, and some stayed the night with him, Snowfur, and Bluefur. Thistleclaw went to his nest. Traitor. Whitekit thought.

When the vigil was over, he watched in dismay as the elders carried his mother to her burial sight. Whitekit followed. He deserved to see his mother put to rest. The elders chose a shady spot near some ferns. He would miss her, but he needed to learn to put the past behind him. I will be a great warrior. He felt a white hot flash of grief. For Snowfur.
