The shine of the gym floor brightens the room. The lights illuminate the building, white glowing in every nook and cranny. The squeak of shoes echoes through the gym. The occasional shout and bounce of a volleyball soothes me.
Nekoma is our first opponent. We are at set point. Tension fills the air.
"Center!" I hear Hinata yell, his hand raised towards Kageyama. Hinata jumps, no. Flies up towards the net. Blockers obstruct his view from the summit. The set is rushed to Hinata's view.
The ball spins, and it stops.
The connection from Hinata's hand to the ball creates a loud boom, soon slapping the floor. Silence settles throughout the courts. The other teams steal a glance at the court of Karasuno and Nekoma. Suddenly, our team breaks the silence, their yells of triumph as the whistle blows, ending the first game. Kageyama smiles. Yes, smiles. Not the creepy, almost horror-story-looking smile. A genuine, calm smile. Hinata returns a grin, his eyes brighten at the sight of his closest partner looking happy for once.
We take on the other 3 teams; Fukurodani, Shinzen, and Aoba Johnsai. Lost, won, won. The Nekoma parents bought the team some soda and watermelon. The boys talk amongst each other, all of them being friendly to each other, as if they were friends since they were children. Smiles all around, the sound of laughs and yells of triumph.
I smile lightly as the other managers chat. This gives me a feeling of comfort and sweetness. They're just like big children, managers as the babysitters. Suga and Daichi come over to ask how we are doing. They both look happy together, almost like a married couple OH My gOD! I look up to see them smiling and talking so casually with each other.
With the two in earshot, I mumble a bit too loudly, "Man, they're like the mother and father of Karasuno."
The girls stop and giggle. I see Daichi and Suga look back at me, eyes widening. Daichi flushes a bright red, while Suga's cheeks are dusted a light pink. Daichi covers his face with his hands and turns away. I shrug and chuckle lightly. Suga smiles, his face still a bit pink.
Seeing as the guys are still having fun, the drinks are gone. I decided to stock up on more soda. Some of the players were gone, most likely walking around the campus to clear their minds.
The light tapping of my sneakers echoes through the empty hallways, giving me a pang of loneliness. The sun rays glow through the windows, dotting the cement floor. The breeze flows gently through the open windows, leaves crackling lightly as the branches sway sweetly. The teacher's lounge is in view as I turn the corner. I walk in to see a pitch black room. I grope for the light switch, finally landing on the switch. The lights flicker on, giving the lounge a comforting amount of light. The smell of stale ramen fills my nostrils. I cough lightly and grimace at the smell. I scan the room silently as the sound of an air conditioner whirs. I see the fridge and walk towards it. I open the door, a spine-chilling breeze whisps across my skin. I shiver and look inside the cold box. I spot four bags of soda and a few watermelons. I grab the bags and close the door. I shut off the lights and step out into the hallway. A warm ray of sun welcomes me as I walk down the hallway towards the gym.
As I walk calmly through the corridor, I hear another set of footsteps. I stop abruptly and look behind me to see the captain of Nekoma walking back towards the gym as well.
"Oh, hey manager of Karasuno." He waved slightly, his smile almost like poison. I wave back and smile.
"Hi! Where did you come from?" I ask the tall captain.
"Just walking around the second floor. And you?" He smirks.
"J-just... Ya know..." I sputter, trying to find the right words, but they just are jumbled together. His eyes flick from my face to the bags hanging on each arm.
"Want me to carry those?" He asks, pointing at the bags.
"Uh... N-no, you don't need to. This is my job, not yours" I say quickly.
"Hmmm?" The tall black-haired captain of Nekoma sneered. His eyes dart down at me, slouching to my height, his eyes meeting mine.
I walk past him quickly."Well, yea. If you'll excuse me, I have to get back to the team." I put my head down and walks briskly down the hallway towards the exit.
"H-hey!" The captain grabs my shoulder. I jerk my shoulder away and walk a little faster, almost running.I bump into another captain of a volleyball team. He's tall, almost six foot two. His smirk could give girls a case of the lovesick jitters. I fall, landing square on my side.
"Whoa! I'm sorry, didn't see you there." He smiles. Almost genuine. Fantastic. He lends me his hand. I grab it and look up to try and catch a glimpse of his face. He looks familiar. his brown-maroon eyes glitter, wind-whipped hair suits him perfectly. Wait... Is that...
"Oikawa?"
