back to the story :

xxxxx

It really bothers me that I can't even remember her name. I feel like I'm good at remembering names but for some reason I just can't think of her's. I talked to her for years. I should have at least remembered her first name.+

I went to a fairly small high school in my home town. It was the type where everyone knew each other so if I asked a friend of mine about some guy in our grade, they would remember them instantly. So it immediately caught me off guard when I was texting my very close friend, Austin, about this girl and he didn't know who I was talking about.+

I would have just forgot about the girl if it wasn't for the fact that she was in marching band with us. Our high school had a marching band with only about 50 to 70 people in it each year. Me and all my friends were in marching band when we were in high school and everyone in marching band knew each other. I'm not just talking about simply knowing each other. We all bonded in marching band. There wasn't a single friend who I didn't know almost every detail about in marching band, but Austin didn't remember her at all.+

The girl I remember was very quiet in class, the most I remember her talking in class is when we had an assignment to give a speech. She had fairly short bright red hair which was just long enough to be put in a ponytail and she always wore it that way. Her face was covered in freckles. I believe she had brown eyes and huge glasses, which was what almost everyone had in marching band. Austin had nerd glasses back then too. The girl also almost always wore jeans and a dark green jacket.+

I guess the reason I remember her so vividly is because we were pretty close friends, we both played french horn in marching band, and we usually sat together in band. Around our sophomore year we had the exact same class schedule and one day I saw her sneak into the band room during lunch time. I don't exactly remember why but I followed her and we hid inside the french horn room in the band room during lunch time and just talked about band stuff. From that day me and her snuck out and ate lunch there together. We usually didn't talk about much, just school or band related things but we would joke around too. I must admit I really liked her and I was actually planning on asking her out, but around my senior year of high school but I finally got a girlfriend and I began eating lunch with my new girlfriend inside of the lunchroom. But me and the girl would still go to classes together and talk whenever we could.+

Back to the point, I remember this girl clearly. Almost more clearly than I remember Austin or anyone else. But I can't find any existence of her, or even remember her first name, and anyone else who was in my marching band doesn't remember her which is absolutely insane to me.+

So after a while of describing the girl to Austin, even to the point where I was describing her drill spots in our marching band shows, I decided to go through our old yearbooks to find her picture and show it to Austin because I was sure she existed and I wasn't crazy. Looking at the band group picture of our senior year, it was a little tough to pick out people in our uniforms because almost everyone looks the same so I texted the picture to Austin and we named literally everyone in that picture but the girl was not one of them. Austin suggested that maybe the girl just wasn't there that day when the picture was taken which was probably true but it just wasn't a good enough answer for me. I tried to look at every kid's picture in our grade and none of them resembled the girl I remember. I knew not to check facebook or myspace because the girl I remember didn't have any social media account. So I eventually went to my school website and got absolutely nowhere but while I was there I got my band director's email.+

My and my old director talked for a while through emails and eventually I brought up the topic of the girl and he didn't remember her either but he asked if she had signed up for any of our competitions and I knew for a fact she did because we had talked about the struggles of trying out for the competitions and how hard the requirements were. So my old director gave me a very old list of everyone who tried out in the competitions. Under the french horns I saw my name and I saw all the other french horn's names which I could remember everyone of them but none of them were the girl.+

Of course all of this is really strange, but this isn't even the part that freaks me out. So me and the girl developed this stupid joke. Which I don't even know if it was a joke anymore. I noticed that she occasionally would just look off into the distance. It wasn't a normal type thing where her eyes would set on something. Her eyes would look around like she was watching something that was moving. I would tease her about it and wave my hand in her face and she would just snap back to normal and laugh at herself. One day when she did this I said something along the lines of "You do that so often, it's like you see ghosts." She just laughed at me and then pointed right beside me. She had been staring there for a while and said that there was a little ghost dog beside me. From then on instead of waving my hand in front of her face when she stared off into the distance, I asked her the question "What ghost are you looking at now?" She would always instantly respond with something fairly creepy. I always thought she was joking
