"And why in the seven circles of Hell should I do that?" asked marietta, infuriated at the arrogance and entitlement that this Mathew character is already showing.
"Because, this cause, this brotherhood of yours, although I don't know how a woman can be in a brotherhood, fits my ideals perfectly. And besides, I feel that you could use a person of my considerable strength and influence."
Dear lord, help me to not strangle the ego out of him. "Well, first of all, this brotherhood follows a creed of tenets. One of said tenets being not to draw any attention to the brotherhood. This means that although we could use your strength, whatever influence you may have, is irrelevant to us. And secondly, a position in this brotherhood is earned, not given. Just as you earn a position in a tournament, so too do you earn your rank in the brotherhood." explained Marietta in a calm but stern voice.
And at once Mathew replied with "Well, what shall I do to earn this spot?"
And just as quick, Marietta, who seemed to have the moral high ground in this exchange retorted "Nothing. You shall do nothing, because you have the moral ineptitude of a giant sloth. The only thing you could do at this point would be to accept one of our many contracts of assassination. And since you have niether the weapons, nor the know how to complete such a task, I hardly see you as a good fit for our creed. With that, I bid you goodnight."
"But Ms. Evans, wait! Before you leave I have one question. Do soldiers not have to train for war?"3 months later
"I think you're finally ready for your first field assignment. There's one of many outstanding contracts waiting for you at the post office on main. You need only show your hood and they shall immediately recognize you. But, before I can send you out on your own, I have a gift for you." Marietta pulled out of her overcoat, two twin wristblades, each intricately designed with engravings on both the casing and blade. Also, the blades seemed to have some sort of shiny metal button near the top . Mathew leans in to take a closer look, and to his great amusement, finds an eagle embossed on the release mechanism.
"You know me too well Marietta. Thank you. I have been waiting for this ever since that dreary night nearly four months ago. I am proud to call you my kin." Said Mathew with the slightest hint of anticipation and wonder.
"You're very welcome. And I too count you as a brother among scoundrels. You've progressed so far in your short few months in the order. It is clear to see that I misjudged you so many nights ago. Thank you Mathew Dumauriérs, for proving me wrong, and proving to yourself and I, what you can do."As Mathew makes his way back to the bureau from the post office, he can't help but resent the simplicity of this first contract, suddenly he remembered, this isn't only this man's life in question, If I fail, it'll be my head on the block. And with that, he decides to start a new tradition, reciting the tenets before accepting a contract. To help him remember his roots, and also, how far he's come since.
