Walking home from school... I wouldn't really call it "a home". More like a constant reminder that we are unwanted by society. To show us everyday that we were given up, and were excepted to go somewhere else. I've been there for as long as I can remember. Around the clock noise of children and caretakers in every room. I hated every minute of being there. Doesn't help when you are the biggest outcast of the bunch. No friends. No family to call my own. After walking a couple blocks, with silence the whole way, I finally stood in front of the place I was supposed to call "home".
"Saint Richmonds Orphanage" I read to myself. I even hated saying it.
I pushed open the old, slightly rusted gate with a loud "SCRREEEE". I can already hear the shouting and screaming coming from inside. Oh how I dreaded walking through that door, knowing that every day and night is just the same. I gripped the handle and turned it. The shouting grew louder with every inch the door opened. I stepped inside making my way through the the crowed entrance and quickly went upstairs. A long hallway with doors wall to wall is the first thing you see. Besides all of the chrildren. I go into my room, which is shared with four other people, and begin my assignments. I can barley concentrate with all this racket. I turn around in my chair.
"Can you all be quite? I'm trying to work." I asked.
"Oh look, guys! The good child is back!" snickered a banged up boy. "What a shame! This place was actually starting to get fun!"
"I don't like this place the same amount as you do. Leave me alone."
"Awww. Did we make someone mad? It's not my fault you were put here. Maybe your folks just didn't want you. At least mine died for a reason."
The great "Monster .vs. Humans" war happened 4 years ago. Even though some humans were killed, others stood guard of the souls before the monsters could reach them. The ones that remained were forced underground and sealed off by a barrier created by the humans. Any ordinary soul can enter through, but getting out required a miracle.
Even though, only a couple of months ago actually, a monster was seen near the village. People described it as a goat like demon with a dress. Some were scared of it at first and were ready to strike at it, but it refused to fight. It kept talking to itself, one second it's merciful and then it shouted "This is what humanity is REALLY like! I will show you!". Eventually the humans got confused and scared, and so they attacked it with everything they had. Rocks, spears, tools, guns, everything! They even handed me a weapon... but with all the hatred around me, and even my slight dislike for monster kind... I couldn't bring myself to do it. The creature was.. smiling. I could tell it was going through the greatest amount of pain it had ever experienced, and it still showed the humans mercy. After awhile, the monster got up, and headed back where it came from, carrying something no one had noticed. The village has been uneasy and higher on security since then.
"Mine died for a reason to you know. Most of ours did." I said, getting angry.
He chuckled. "Ha! Yeah! Most of ours. Not yours. Your parents helped the disgusting beings. No wonder no one likes you. Your parents betrayed your own kind!"
I was starting to tear up. I hated when others brought up that subject.
"Why can't you just disappear?.... Like them."
I stormed out of the room. "Them", I thought to myself. They disappeared 2 years ago, and no one has seen them since. The only thing we know is that they were walking out of the village with a disgusted look on their face. They were always acting strange.
I ran out of the room, down the steps, out the door, and through the gate. It was then, I could cry. If I ever showed anyone in that place I could cry, I'd be done for. I started to walk down the dusty path, kicking an empty can of food. The label was torn off so I did t know what it was. I kicked it for about a 2 or 3 miles. I was trying to go far so it would take me long enough to get back before the 7pm curfew. That stupid orphanage is to strict for such kids at such a young age. I continued kicking the can once I got into the woods. I didn't really notice until I walked face first into a tree.
"Ow! What the - oh. Well ain't I stupid.". I said as I got up and cleaned myself off. All I had on was knee-length shorts, buckled shoes, a pink short sleeved shirt, and a stained yellow-ish apron with a tiny pocket on the chest. My style was not really excepted by most, but it's my style and I like it. I found the can again and started to get bored with it so I decided to get rid of it before I went back. I found a stream in a tiny crevice with a small opening leading to the underground. I couldn't see down there so it was the perfect place to dispose of the can. I kicked it with all my strength and it went flying down to the unknown. I turned around to leave until I heard a loud "CLUNK!". Then, a scruffy voice followed...
"OWWIE!" shouted the voice. "THAT HURT!"
Someone was down there. Someone or something was down there. I was frightened now. So, I did only what a crazy person would do, and answered.
"W-Who's there?" I stammered.
"IS SOMEONE HERE?" said the voice. "WHERE ARE YOU? I CANT SEE YOU!"
I stayed quiet for a couple seconds, then I answered. "U-Up here!"
"OH! I STILL CANT SEE YOU THOUGH. BUT THATS OK!"
"Y-Your not going to hurt me.. A-Are you?"
"WHAT? NO NEVER! I WOULD NEVER EVER HURT A FRIEND!" The voice became more cheerful than ever.
"Y-You consider us... friends? You've never even seen me. Nor have I seen you."
"SO? MY BROTHER ALWAYS SAYS TO JUDGE PEOPLE HOW THEY TREAT OTHERS AND YOURSELF, AND YOU SEE REALLY NICE!".
"Haha, sorry. No one has really wanted to be my friend before. Guess I'm just not used to it." I sat down on a damp rock in the middle of the stream.
"ITS OK. THIS IS MY FIRST TIME TO."
There was a long silence. The only noise was the approaching crickets for the night and the rushing water spilling down into the cavern where the stranger was. The creature broke the silence.
"MY NAME IS PAPYRUS!" He seemed excited to finally share this information.
I gave a little laugh. "Haha. My name is..." I hesitated.
"My name is Kip." I said with a smile.
(Kip is a gender-neutral character)
