Chapter 3: A Shock to Remember
Praxton:
Everyone just kept staring at me, some with gaping mouths and some with looks of pure astonishment. I just kept looking around wondering when someone was going to clue me in as to what was going on. After about ten minutes of awkwardness, my mother ran into the house and came out carrying the huge hall mirror with her.
“Sweetheart, now I want you to just stay calm and not freak out when I show you this, ok?” She bargained with me. I nodded my head at her and prepared to see something terrible as she turned the mirror around in her hands.
When it was finally facing me, I understood the awe everybody had when they saw my wolf. I was snow white with a jet black star positioned in the center of my forehead. I had a black tipped tail as well. It finally dawned on me: I was a royal.
Royal wolves are extremely rare and only come around about once every 1200 years. There are only ever two royals at a time: the king and queen, a mated pair. I knew that my mate had not changed yet because the news of a royal spreads faster than wildfire. In about two days time, every wolf in the world will know that there is another royal king. When I am fully mated, I will become the king of all of the wolves, worldwide. It’s a possibility I had never even thought of and quite honestly, I’m freaking out.
I looked around the circle one last time before I took off through the woods. I didn’t know what else to do. I just found out that I was going to rule over all of my kind and the pressure I was feeling already was immense. Before I can even think about being king and fulfilling my duties, I had to find my mate. As I ran out of the trees and into a clearing, I had made up my mind: I was going to find my mate, no matter what it takes.
Korallynn:
“You must be mistaken, my father died two years ago,” I say to the stranger on my porch. I am so confused. I have never seen this man in my life and here he is, claiming to be my dad. Quite honestly, he’s pissing me off. My dad is dead and I don’t appreciate this man trying to ruin my memories of my father.
“Korallynn, your mother is Lynda Ryder, formerly Lynda McLane, and I am your biological father. Do me a favor and ask your mother about a man named Flynn Lunal. She’ll tell you the truth. I’ll be back tomorrow, Korallynn.” With that the man turned around and walked down my driveway.
Slowly I close the door and lean against it, sliding to the floor. I guess I’ll just have to talk to my mom tonight when she gets home. She said she gets off at eleven, so I can expect her around midnight. I’ll make sure that everyone is asleep so we can talk in private.
Luci pulls me out of my thoughts as she walks out of the living room and into the foyer. Taking in my current position on the floor she says, “So… no candy?” Crap. I completely forgot. I get up, grab her hand and walk back to the living room.
“We can still get candy, Luci. I did promise right?” I plaster a smile onto my face and reach down to grab Bray off the floor. I grab my keys and some money, shoving them into my pockets after we walk out of the house and lock the door. As we head to the store, Luci half dragging me by the hand and Brayden gripping my neck tightly, I start to see the similarities between Flynn and me.
We both have the same slate grey eyes, thick jet black hair, and naturally olive skin. I have my mother’s nose, but the same full, red lips as Flynn. The similarities are too many to discount and I can’t help but wonder if he is telling the truth. I never did look quite like my mom, dad, or any of my brothers and sisters. You can clearly tell that all of them are related with the chestnut hair and fair skin of my mom, and the green eyes of my dad.
I never really questioned how different I looked form the rest of my family, but now I realize that I looked more like the stranger on my porch than anyone else I had ever met in my life. My notion was right: Everything was about to change. And I have no idea if it’s for the better.
