The tigress growled ferociously, her sharp teeth glistening in saliva. The startled deer started bounding away, springs on her feet. The agile tiger raced after her, a streak of orange and brown chasing a smudge of fawn brown in the dappled sunlight. The two were faster than light. The birds were silent, and the only sounds were from the thudding of feet and an occasional growl or snarl. They both leapt over ditches and scrambled on muddy banks, exhausted.
Every step was a struggle for the vulnerable deer. Her legs ached, and her heart was beating faster than ever before. Her chest was heaving and she could feel the tigers hot breath on her neck. She tried to weave in between the trees but was too dizzy. Her vision was blurred, like she was underwater. But the determined deer sprinted for her life, smart enough to know that every lungful of air she takes may be her last.
The tigress stretched out a long paw and her razor sharp claws raked the deers leg, blood spilling everywhere. The deer yelped in horror and the tigress gained on her, panting and puffing. Her luscious coat was glimmering in sweat and she knew that she would have to stop running soon.
The deer crumpled to the ground, unable to continue in her frightened, headlong gallop. The tiger caught her breath and took in gulps of icy cold water from the clear stream, running down the valley faster than the tiger had when chasing the deer. She returned to the immobile, terrified deer and clutched her limp body in her pink mouth covered in blood.
She returned to her content cubs who started ripping the pieces of flesh apart. The triumphant tigress fell asleep in the warm sunlight, her cubs playing beside her in the shade of the cave.
