Studying late at night made you do things you usually wouldn't do. That meant things like bursting into tears for no particular reason, eating whole meals at midnight, inviting people over to avoid studying ( and you hated having people over at night). Sometimes you even went out for a ride.
The first time you met him was when you went to a McDonald's at three a.m.
It was empty, except for one lonely car in the parking lot. You had decided to go through the drive thru.
"What do you want?"
You were taken a back. The voice coming from the speaker was clearly male, a rude male at that. But you were too tried to complain. "Hello to you too."
The voice on the other end sighed. "Sorry. I meant to say, 'welcome to McDonald's, how may I help you?'" He did not sound sorry at all.
"Uh, I'd like a large hot coffee, please."
There was a pause and then he asked how many sugars. "Eight," you answered without much thought.
There was another pause and then a weird sound. "That's a lot, you don't need to diet, do you?"
You snorted, "I'm sure you've heard people order way worse things."
He hummed, "that's true." He told you your total and you prepared to drive off.
The next window opened and you fished out your money. Your arm was half way out the car when you noticed how hot the rude guy was. Blonde hair that was a little messy, light colored eyes, and dark glasses. He was also tall.
He glared at you when you didn't move to take your change. "I don't feel like dealing with customers right now."
You snapped out of it and took the change. After your coffee arrived, he bid you a half hearted good bye.
The next time you saw him, he had been more irritated than last time. It was around the same time.
When you told him how many sugars you wanted, he quickly decided to take his irritation out on you. "You sure you're not overweight?"
Despite how tired you had been, you quickly lashed out. "Did you just call me fat, you asshole?"
He said something about an annoying girl with no self control.
"The fuck did you say about me?"
When you went to next window, it wasn't him who greeted you. A nervous freckled boy gave you your order and apologized for the other boy's behavior.
You found yourself returning to the place at the same time every Friday. It became part of your routine. The same thing happened. The guy would be an asshole, and you would lash out. Sometimes the freckled boy appeared to attempt to make peace.
You still didn't know the asshole's name.
One day you didn't arrive at the usual time. Neither of the boys made a comment about it, but they were worried about you.
When you arrived an hour later, your hair was messier than usual and your eyes were red and puffy.
He didn't ask what had happened. He didn't make any rude comments. When you came to the window, he wordlessly handed the coffee over and took the money.
You made no move to drive off.
When he asked why you were still there, you responded with something that made him freeze.
"My mom died."
He would have offered his condolences, but you didn't let him. "Where Yama?"
"He's in the front."
You were silent again. After what seemed like an eternity of awkwardness, you turned to look at him.
"I never got your name."
He was surprised for a moment. "Tsukishima Kei," he answered.
You gave him a sad smile. His heart skipped a beat when you told him yours.
"Well Tsukishima Kei, I'll be seeing you next week. I'm expecting my coffee already prepared." And then you were gone.
You didn't show up for three weeks. When you finally did, he gave you your coffee along with a box of cookies. He ended up driving you home because you wouldn't stop crying.
