I see a bright light as I wake up. I blink a few times to get used to it. Then I move my hair away from my face and get up. Looking around my room, it looks different for some reason, I can’t get used to having my own room. I put my slippers on and walk down stairs to get a cup of coffee. It’s so quite here since Carly left for uni.
I boil the water in the kennel and check my phone ‘4 new messages from JAKE HEEGER’.I put a spoon of coffee beans inside my cup then read the messages.
‘Mey you there?’
‘Maey!’
‘Answer me!’
‘Anna and I are coming over right away!’Save & Publish
The kennel stops shrieking. I pure the water in the cup then add some sugar.
I sit on the couch and turn the TV on. It’s on the ‘Morning To Evening News’ channel. I check my phone again, what does he mean I think to myself. I look at the TV and my eyes freeze.
Burning buildings, crushed cars, thousands of dead people and black smoke everywhere.
“Mum!” I yell as I turn up the volume. There’s no answer.
“MUM!” I yell again.
“Stay in doors! Grab food supplies for at least 7 weeks and lock yourself in a safe place.” Says the reporter. “Recommended underground or basements because they are coming! Keep up with us for updates every day at 9:00AM to 6:00PM till then find a place to hide!”
I’m so confused, what’s going on?
“Mum!” I yell for the last time. I run over to her room and open the door. She’s gone. With no thinking I rush to check Corry’s room. His not there too.
“Corry!” I Scream as my eyes start drifting with tears. Then I feel a hand on my back. It’s Jake, I recognise the warm feeling of him touching me. I turn around and hug him; I notice that Corry and Anna are there too. “Thank g-d”. I say and hug him tighter. “What’s going on?” He looks at Corry then whispers in my ear.
“Zombies.”
“What?”
“No time to explain, come on we have to hurry”
We rush into his jeep and take off.
I sit in the front next to Jake, Anna and Corry are in the back.
Jake holds my hand.
“Where are we going?" I ask.
“To the survivors.” Says Anna.
“Survivors?”
“Ah…”
Suddenly she stops talking she notices that Corry is listening.
She pulls a pair of headphones out of her bag.
“Here Corry, why won’t you listen to some music.”
Corry’s only 8 and his conditions makes him a bit different from any other 8 year old. He doesn’t talk much and he has an eating disorder and ADHD. But he’s a smart kid.
“There is a safe place away from the city where a group of survivors are.” She says.
“Away from the city?” I panic. I’ve never been out of the city.
“It will be okay, it’s a safe little neighbourhood. Surrounded by huge walls and guards, so none could get in or out without making sure they’re not infected. ” Says Jake.
I look at him. His messy brown hair is shaking in the wind. I remember that we used to do this. Just drive around the city. Imagining that it’s only both of us, blocking the whole world out.
He notices that I’m looking at him. He smiles at me. He has the most gorgeous smile. He always cheers me up when he smiles. I grin.
After 6 hours it starts getting dark. We stop in an old banded town.
“We’ll have to spend the night here.” Says Jake.
I look at Anna and Corry they are both asleep. Corry looks so peaceful. I haven’t seen him like this for quite awhile. He has been so stressed since dad died, Mum is too. She started drinking and coming home late; It’s been so hard for us. Seeing my mum like this made the whole death situation worse. That’s when Corry started to develop his speech disorder. He would just stare at my mum till he brakes into tears, I don’t blame the poor thing. Seeing someone you used to know and love being like this.
