Nate flashed into the living room of the old peoples home, the smell of elderly humans wasting away filling his nose and causing him to scrunch his face up. If there was a scent to show death was close, that would be it, he thought to himself as he eyed the bodies in the space around him. He actually had two appointments in the nursing home, within three minutes of each other. It was one of the cheaper, cruddier nursing homes, which was why he made collections there so often. The unfortunate souls who ended up here never lasted more than a year, and that was rare. Most never made it past four months.
Not that the staff minded, being the evil that they were. The 5 members of staff were all the same, flesh eating demons from one of the lowest circles of hell. They would eat the dead bodies, after a couple of days of course so you could really tell they were completely gone. Disgusting creatures, but each to their own.
His mind wandered as he waited for both of the souls to appear, to the conversation Trixie had forced on him the day before.
"Heya boss man, ooh what do you have there for me?" Trixie grinned, her speckled eyes flashing with curiosity at what he had in his hands as he entered the IT room. He dumped the massive pile of paperwork down, grinning widely at her."That, my dear girl, is all of the paperwork I needed to get done. Every single scrap of it. Everything is signed off, or filled in, where its needed to be. And its even filed alphabetically for you, so it won't take you long to scan through and file away."
The shocked look on Trixie's face made him chuckle as he threw himself into one of the office chairs, spinning around before sitting up and logging into the screen in front of him. "Oh no you don't, boss. How did you get done so fast? You cant tell me you spent all of your hours off doing freaking paperwork!"
Gaping at him as he arched a brow, she continued on her rant, "I mean it, boss-man. You need to find a hobby, or get laid or something. This is crazy. What's the point of having workers if your never going to actually spend any of your free time, you know, free. I worry about you. Its not healthy to be cooped up as much as you are. And I know your death, and you have no time limit, but damn dude, get a freaking life!"
Just as he opened his mouth to speak, Trixie waggled her finger at him and butted in before he could even begin a retort, "And don't you dare say you're out in that garden of yours either. That does not count as going out. Your still at home, and not socialising. You need to explore this new world." She sat down beside him, watching him with her head tilted to one side. Her tone turned softer as she asked, "How long has it been now since Thomas died?"
Nate frowned, trying to work it out. He looked down at his hands, before looking back up at her. "Around 120 years or so, Trix. Wow, that's a lot longer than I realised. I..." he sighed, leaning back in his chair. "Has it really been that long? I haven't been out other than work since then really. Fuck."
Rubbing his face, he suddenly felt tired. Trixie took his hand, smiling at him with a glint in her eye. "We need to get you back on the horse, so they say. I know you want love, but your never going to find it unless you start looking for it. Maybe its time to take a peek, eh?"
Chewing his lip, he conceded defeat. "I'll think about it. How's that? Maybe your right."
Trixie squealed in excitement, causing him to wince as she jumped up and danced about the room, her features bright with hope and glee. Gods, he really had to do this, didn't he.
Snapping back to the current world he saw the second spirit appear, and pushed all thoughts of his conversation away to be reviewed later. Greeting the first soul, he lead the old lady named Meredith over to the elderly man, whose name was... "Charles, I presume? Hello, my dears, my name is Thanatos, and I am here to lead you to your afterlives."
