It feels like hours have passed, I only hear one set of footsteps. I can't tell whose they are, making me more nervous than ever. The basement door opens, making my heartrate go back up. I quietly get behind the couch, putting myself out of sight. I see a light bouncing off the walls.
"Mia? Mia, it's me." I hear Asher's voice. I slowly stand up, and go to him.
"D-Did you see who it was?" He embraces me in a hug, I try to stop myself from shaking.
"Yes, and you're not going to like the answer." After I hear that, I collapse to the ground. "He didn't see me. Once I caught glimpse of him, I came back down here."
"How did he find me? We've moved at least five hours from my old home. I just don't understand." I'm sure Asher can't understand me through my sobs, I'm just so scared.
"It's going to be okay. We're locked down here, I'm going to call 911, okay?" I nod my head and watch Asher as he searches for his phone. "Shit, I think I left it upstairs."
"Here," I say, "take mine." I hand him my phone. I watch as he tries to call the police but all that comes up is "NO SIGNAL."
"Shit." Asher mumbles. "Okay, here's the plan. I'm going to go to the top of the stairs and try to get at least one bar. I will keep the call short, just in case it cuts out." I squeeze his hand once more.
"Be quick." I whimper. Asher goes and sits at the top of the stairs. I can see his face from the light of my phone. He puts it up to his ear, but no luck. That's when I hear a quiet knock on the door.
