Vasilisa opened her eyes to yet another day of her life. Groggily she pulled back the covers, clambered out of bed and looked at the calender to see what she had planned for today. With a gasp she suddenly remembered it was April 7th. Her 11th birthday. She quickly ran to her mirror, grabbed a hairbrush from her draw and brushed her hair; she had long, dark brown, wavy hair with red highlights. Beaming, she ran from her room and bounded down the stairs in joy. 'I can't believe I actually forgot my birthday!' she thought as she hurried into the living room.

Her parents sat on the sofa with a pile of presents in front of them. "Happy birthday sweetie!" called Vasilisa's mum jumping up from the sofa to give her a bear hug and a quick kiss. As if on cue dad got up and walked over to join in their embrace.

"Group Hug!" they all called in unison, and burst out laughing. It was a family thing, they always did it and it never failed to make them hysterical.

"Happy birthday lil' girl" said Vasilisa's dad ruffling her hair.

"So..." said Vasilisa's mum. "Presents?"

"Kaylie.." said Vasilisa's dad. "Remember what we said?"

"Oh yeah" replied Kaylie. "Breakfast first, How on earth could I forget!"

"Cut the sarcasm!" input Vasilisa laughing at her mothers tone of voice. "So what's for breakfast?"

"Whatever you want! It is your birthday after all!" Chorused Vasilisa's mum and dad.

So Vasilisa's dad, Daniel, went into the kitchen to cook Vasilisa's birthday breakfast. Meanwhile, Vasilisa and her mum went back into the living room and sat down. As usual Vasilisa couldn't contain her excitement about her birthday. So she jumped out of her seat, turned on the music and started dancing like some crazed wild cat! She dragged her mum out of the seat where she was sitting and pulled her into crazy sort of waltz.

By the time breakfast was ready they were breathing deep and heavy, staggering on their feet with exhaustion. It didn't dim the atmosphere, if anything it just exited them even more. When breakfast was over they shuffled back into the living room to open the presents.

They crammed onto the sofa and Vasilisa picked up the first present. A while later about halfway through the pile she picked up another. It was pretty wrapping, bright emerald green and glittery, woah! She looked up at mum and dad eagerly and began to open the present without ripping the paper. Eventually she was able to pull out what appeared to be a box. Hmm..

Vasilisa opened the box and pulled out another parcel wrapped in tissue paper. It felt like a book and tucked underneath the ribbon was a cream envelope with a red wax seal with some sort of emblem pressed into it but Vasilisa couldn't quite make it out. 'What is it? I haven't seen this seal  before, who could it possibly be from?' thought Vasilisa.

Cautiously, Vasilisa turned to look at her parents and gave them a puzzled look. They laughed at her expression and said "Just open it and look for yourself!" so she did.

She slid her finger under the seal and broke it. She pulled out some funny looking paper and frowned at her parents.

"It's parchment sweetie! Don't look so worried!" cooed Kaylie.

Vasilisa breathed a sigh of relief, she didn't know why but there was something weird about the parchment, it gave her tingles. She was curious and couldn't keep the calm facade that she usually wore on her face whilst opening presents. Her parents caught a glimpse of anxiety in her stunning emerald green eyes and laughed.

"Come on, open it, we have waited 11 years for this day" chuckled Daniel. Seeing Vasilisa's confusion he snatched the letter out of her hands, pulled it out the envelope, unfolded it and placed it on top the envelope and passed it back. "Read" he said.

Vasilisa gave them one last look each, took a deep breath and began to read...
