"You're kidding right?" Ellie stood, arms crossed and eyebrows raised. "This is why you brought me here?"
"You don't like it? I was sure you would," said Tegan.
Both Tegan and Ellie were standing on a cliff, above a sandy golden shore, lapped by a rushing body of water. As they stared into the distance, past the never-ending horizon of blue, there was an eerie thought crossing both of their minds; where was he?
***
It was an ordinary Saturday night, the quiet hum of the TV reporters relaying the breaking news that day and the exclamatory screams from Ellie's dad, Finn, (pointing out whenever any of their information was slightly wrong) could be heard. Ellie sat at the seat near the door as she ran in, hoping no one would see her come in this late. Throwing her bag over her shoulder, she sat with her knees propped up and phone in hand, whistling the normal pop song that would catch her attention.
"Ellie, where have you been?! I've been calling you all day!" cried Samantha, Ellie's mother.
Ellie sighed, "I told you I might be late... Anyways, my phone was out of battery."
"Mhm, and that's why you're using your phone just fine now, huh?"
"Um..." Ellie stared down at her hands, remembering that she was in fact using her phone. "I'm sorry, okay. You know I was with Tegan, there's nothing to worry about when I'm with her or Phil."
Samantha shook her head and took a few steps forward before disappearing into the kitchen. Ellie sighed a sigh of relief and sprinted up the stairs to her bedroom, slamming the door behind her.
Her bedroom was fairly small. She had lived in this house all her life, yet never gained the courage to decorate, and so the room was simply decorated with a couple of posters taped to her beige walls and a fake potted-plant standing in the corner of the room. Suddenly, breaking the silence was the catchy tune that was her ringtone. She gazed down at her phone and looked at the caller ID: Tegan, Ellie tapped the answer button.
"Hey Ellie, I don't have long, listen carefully." Ellie could hear her muffled voice out of the phone but something seemed different - more urgent.
"Alright... what's wron-"
"I said listen," Tegan paused, breathing heavily and stuttering, she continued, "something happened to Phil. I need you to come. Right. Now."
"Okay, I can't, my mom's already super mad at me... What happened?" Ellie knew that this wasn't the right reaction, but despite them being her best friends, she knew she didn't want to get involved with something that sounded so serious.
"I'll tell you when you're here. Just come. Promise me, you'll come." That was the end of the sentence, Tegan's voice had turned into an emotional mumble, and was soon the inevitable beep of the ended call.
