When Kai had advised Ethan to use his time wisely he knew what he meant: Fortune-telling. It was the only time Ethan was guaranteed to be Dawn's partner thanks to Ms. Danner's arrangements. Even on the first day of class when Deryk had tried to change Ms. Danner's mind, she was unwavering and forced Deryk to practice with her at each lesson. It was the only moment of victory Ethan had really had in the battle between them for Dawn.
He sat in class waiting for Dawn to arrive. He watched as Shadoe and Kai sat together in their usual displeasure of perpetually being partners in class. Ethan wished they could get along as well, but I suppose the deep-rooted hatred for each other in their blood will never fully be relieved. At least they could speak to each other without throwing punches or curses now.
Ethan had been so distracted by his thoughts that he jumped when he found Dawn sitting directly across from him at their table.
"Good morning."
"Good morning." She replied flatly without looking into his eyes.
"Dawn, I'm sorry. Just hear me out."
"I don't want to talk about it, Ethan." She dismissed him.
"Fine, then listen." He huffed. He struggled for a moment while Dawn stared at him with anger and frustration in her scowl. He only managed three words before Ms. Danner began the class. "I miss you." Dawn's eyes briefly softened before she quickly looked to their teacher.
"Good morning, class. Today we'll be starting our unit on scrying. Scrying can be used with a variety of mediums such as crystal balls, water, trance, stones, as well as many others. Today we'll be working on location-based scrying." Ms. Danner threw her arms forward and a stack of maps spread out to everyone's tables. With another wave of her hands everyone found a small crystal attached to a golden chain. "This is a map of the room. Your partner will take something of yours and hide it while your eyes are closed. You will then use scrying to locate the item. If you find it, then you and your partner will reverse roles, fail to find it and you're item remains there until you can. You must use something personal as scrying requires a familiar connection to the item or person it is looking for. If you have nothing on your persons, then you will use a lock of your hair." Ms. Danner said with a devilish smile. Ethan saw Shadoe huff a growl knowing that she would have to cut a lock of her hair for Kai to hide. "The key to scrying is unbreakable concentration to find the item. It may take several minutes. You have until the end of class."
"Do you want to go first?" Ethan asked and Dawn shook her head.
"What do you have that's personal?" She asked moving the map to face him and handing him the scrying stone.
"Uh." Ethan thought and dug through his bag. "Nothing really, I'll guess I'll be using my hair." He laughed and took the pair of scissors on the table. "Would you mind?" He held the scissors out to Dawn.
"Sure." She crawled over to him and took up the scissors.
"I'm really sorry, Dawn." Ethan apologized again.
"Ethan." She sighed. "I just feel like you're a whole different person now." She held up a lock of his golden hair.
"Because you believe what he's been telling you?" Ethan scowled.
