I couldn't believe it.

It was the moment we were dreading. It seemed that our wounds had finally taken a toll on our bodies. I looked over at Frank, tears filling my eyes, feeling the pain that he felt inside also. I saw him laying down out on the rubble road where the battle broke out, trying to ease the pain by keeping still. It was worth a shot, I thought. I shakily laid down beside him, and softly laid my head on his chest. He slowly raised his head off of the ground, looking down at me and smiled.
"You know," He said, "I'm glad at least that I won't have to die a lonely death."
I looked into his eyes and gently touched his face, which had fallen pale long ago.
"Frank," I began to tear up, "What are you saying?"
I began to cry, knowing that he did not have much time left. I weakly clung onto his blue shirt, as my tears soaked through it. I felt his cool hand run through my hair slowly. A tear ran down his face as he smiled.
"I'm with the one person who has loved me from the beginning, my best friend. I wouldn't have lived this long without you."
He kissed my forehead gently as he laid his head back down. I saw a drop of blood run from his lips, and I felt the lump in my throat enlarge. He coughed violently, and I gasped, putting my hand to my mouth. I removed my hand in shock, seeing the velvet red blood on my hand.
I was also nearing my end.
I looked at Frank, who was slowly shutting his eyes.
"Frank.. Frank.." I sobbed, tears flooding my vision, "Don't leave me.. Please.."
I caressed his face with my hands. He smiled weakly and said shakily,
"Gerard, I love you so much."
He took hold of my left hand and placed it above his heart.
"I wish it didn't have to end like this, but I'll be waiting for you when I leave. Right at the gate. Please don't cry, we'll be together, and everything will be alright. I promise."
I watched Frank close his eyes for the last time as he softly repeated,
"I promise.."
My hand rested above his heart, and I slowly kissed him on the cheek. I felt his warmth for the final time, smiled, and closed my eyes. I felt my body growing heavier and heavier as I murmured my final words to Frank.
"I love you too."
