We pulled up to the school as crowds of parents and children made their ways in. I turned the car off as Taehyung played I Spy with Yoonki.
"Well cheonsa this is it." He said giving her the rectangular smile. She smile back at him. It was like looking in a mirror. "Ready to be punished?" I rolled my eyes again opening the driver side of the car. "Taehyung, I'm gonna punish you if you lay one hand on my baby."
Taehyung took acceptance to the dare and messed up his daughter hair. "Yah! Appa stop." Yoonki giggled. "Your still being disrespectful? Oh, your still getting the maemae."
"Yoonki, hurry out." I interrupted the bonding. She did as she was told and stepped out the car with her white uniform and messy hair. I kneeled down and straightened hair back and fixed her blue bow.
"There you go. Now let go meet your new classmate." I said.
Taehyung got out of the car and stretched. "Yah, let's hurry so the maemae can begin." He gave Yoonki a scary glare that made her smile more. I looked up at my handsome husband raising to my feet. "Michyeosseo? (Are you crazy?) Your staying in the car while I take her to school."
"But I don't wanna sit in the car." He complained folding his arms.
"Then you can walk back home."
"Or I could just drive the car and you can walk home." He said coldly.
I glared at his threat. Over the years Taehyung and I have been shifting power in the relationship. I was still gentle and independent, but I grew a sort of tolerance for Taehyung's rudeness. Especially when it happens around Yoonki.
"Please Taehyung just stay in the car and don't argue with me."
He gave me a cold stare that looked familiar. It was the stare that the old Taehyung used whenever he went on one of his bullying rampages through high school. His expression was strong then quickly became soft again.
"Alright, just hurry so we can go home." He said and kissed Yoonki then me. He left for the car while I took Yoonki into the school.
His kiss was a bit bland, but what can I do when he's like this?
The school halls were full of life. Everywhere were kids of different ages dragging their parents through the place. I felt weird having to finally experience this change. My grip on Yoonki's wrist tighten a little, but not too much.
"Alright let's see where your new teacher is." We saw different lists of student names posted a board next to the entrance. It was crowded by many parent so it took awhile to check.
Yah, this is ridiculous
Finally the lines became shorter. I managed to get to the lists, but I could find her name. I struggled for a while looking quite foolish.
Honestly, I was waiting on Taehyung to sneak up behind me and be like 'Yah, it's right there Hyejinnie Pabo.' and point to the name.
"Do you need help?" A voice asked.
I turned to see a dark browned skinned woman looking at me. I didn't know what to say, but I didn't want to be rude.
"Um, just can't find my daughter's name."
"Eomma, it's right there." Yoonki hit the list on the right of me titled, Mrs. Park's Class.
"Ah, such a good eye." The dark woman continued. "And what a luck. My daughter also has Mrs. Park. "
I then notice the small girl standing behind the woman's leg. She had a bit of a lighter brown tone than the woman. Her hair was long, but more rugged. And her eyes were big, but narrow.
"Why, she adorable." I complimented.
"Yeah, she can be a bit shy to new people, but once she's comfortable it's all down hill."
The woman moved the little girl in front of me and Yoonki.
"Say hello, Riley." She told her.
"Anneyeonghasaeyo (Hello formally) nice to meet you."
She seemed so innocent and polite. "Anneyeong." I told her as Yoonki looked at her strange.
"Eomma, why is her skin so dark?"
I was as shocked as the dark skinned woman. I felt so embarrassed of this. In Korea, we have this sort of- what the world sees as racism towards people of dark tones or color. Since I've stayed in America for a while I made a lot of friend who were dark tonned so I tried to raise Yoonki to be acceptable.
I immediately grabbed Yoonki and gave her a glare. Then I looked up to the woman. She seemed pretty unsettled by my daughter comment.
"I'm sorry. I try not to have her think that way." I said.
"It's okay. I've dealt with kids like her in school here too. It's just a little simple minded judgement."
She smiled to me, but I knew she was pissed.
"I just Riley doesn't fully go through it just yet." I said. "I hope so, but some traditions are hard to break."
"What wrong with my skin?" Riley asked checking her arm.
"Nothing. It was just a dumb question." Yoonki said trying not to disappoint me.
Soon the bell rang meaning it was time for kids to find their classes. I crouched down to my daughter fixing her hair again.
"Now, be nice and respectful to your teachers and other classmates. All classmates, okay?"
She nodded to me. "Okay, now give Eomma a kiss goodbye." She pecked me and I did the same. "And also why don't you go with Riley?"
Yoonki hesitated then decided to go with Riley. As the two walked off we both watch our little girls disappear.
"You didn't have to correct her." The woman said. I looked confused. "I mean it's just that I never raised her to be judgemental to anyone. It's just not right." The woman sighed and fixed herself. "Yes, but she was young. Easily influenced."
"Probably from her grandparents." I said. "Those old coots never know when to just let it go." We both laughed for awhile. An awkward cloud of silence was over us.
"I like you. What your name?" She asked.
"Kim Hyejin." I shook her hand. "And you?"
"Cora- Cora Dobson."
