There was originally supposed to be three kids in the Matthews family. Elliott, Riley, and Auggie. But then Disney/the writers wrote Elliott out because they figured if Elliott was 15, Topanga and Corey would have had to had Elliott when they were too young. Teo Halm was casted as Elliott.
