Prologue
If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.-Leviticus 20:13
This is what I’ve had pounded into my head by my parents for the past month.
Do I believe that it is true? No. I think that the God they believe in so strongly could be something an old crazy man made up all the thousand years ago.
Hell! I could probably make up a religion right now and in a hundred years or so I’ll have a full-fledged group of followers.
Right now I am sitting in my parent’s car on the way to a new piece of land they bought in Oklahoma in hopes they would, in their words, ‘work the gay out of me.’ Luckily, I don’t have those super mad parents who kick their kids out for being homosexual. I just have the ones who always think it’s just a phase and slightly mad.
I looked out my window and saw miles upon miles of lush grass and full trees. The dirt road ahead of us was empty except for the moving truck behind us holding our things.
“Now, Luka,” my father started, “when we get to the house you’re going to get all your luggage into your room and take a look around the land.”
“Why?” I asked lazily, looking at him in the rear view mirror.
“Because you’re going to be spending a lot of time working on it and your mother and I don’t want you to get lost.” he told me.
My mother scoffed at that. “I don’t give a rats butt if he gets lost! He is the reason I had to leave all of the ladies back in New York to come here and he’s the reason you have to find a new job!” she yelled heatedly uncrossing her arms to throw them into the air, “He can get lost all he wants. He is just a disgrace to the Winthrop name.”
When I said my parents weren’t mad, and more ‘it’s a phase’ kind of way, I meant my father. My mother wasn’t actually happy about anything anyone says about their sexuality. She was a strong Christian woman and she didn’t tolerate many things other than what the bible intended for us to do so she wasn’t as accepting. She huffed out a breath and went back to crossing her arms looking childish.
The next hour in the car was quiet except to the light static coming through the radio and the rumble of the car as we turned into a dirt driveway. I took my headphones out and scooted over to see we were surrounded by blue skies and grass.
“We’ll get some more cows and horses soon.” My father declared suddenly.
Wait? We already have animals? And we already had enough to be able to say more? “More?” I asked surprised.
“Yes, we already have about 40 cows and five horses for you to tend to,” he exclaimed, “You didn’t think you’d get the first week easy did you?” He asked smirking at me in the mirror.
I didn’t answer and we soon made one last turn and were in front of a beautiful two story white farmhouse with green shudders and a green wall in the patio section leading to the front door. From what I could see there was also a garage in the back with what I’m guessing is filled with four-wheelers, tractors, and an area for the cars.
My father stopped the car and I hopped out and sighed as I looked to the land surrounding me.
This was nothing like New York.
I was used to cars honking and the constant sound of city life! Now all I hear is the occasional cow mooing or some animal scurrying in the grass. And don’t get me started on smell! I smell cow shit and dirt! Now that I’m here I sort of miss the car fumes and old water smell of New York.
I heard my mother’s door slam and I when I turned around she gave me a look that could scare Brian Shaw. I hurriedly got my bags from the moving truck and hauled my bags upstairs.
My room was absolutely stunning. The walls were a pale blue and though my bed was bare, it was big and soft looking. There was a large window on the far right side of the room that let me see as far as the trees would stretch. I put my clothes away and went back downstairs to go outside and look around.
As I made my way up to the garage that held the four wheelers I’m looking for, I saw the animals my father was talking about. A few meters away from the garage was a herd of cows and in the far back I could see the horses. He mentioned a lot of animals and I was fine with that, but I didn’t think 40 or so cows would take up this much room! I shook my head and opened up the garage to look around the land I was going to have the gay worked out of me on.
