Muscles contracted in convulsions as the immense pain was too much for her to handle. She fell to the ground, her vision getting fuzzy and small drops of sweat trickled down her forehead. Lee was very pissed off right now; he pulled out his gun and kept one eye on his injured partner. Her curled up form looked pitiful and weak with her shaking pale hand clutching her shoulder.
Anger began to bubble in his veins as 3 intruders finally showed their faces. All of them slowly appeared from the bushes, one jumping down from a tree where he was most probably spying on them. If he was there for a while, then he saw how Darnelle fed on the Soul. His hand automatically clenched around the trigger of his heavy gun as it usually did in risky and sticky situations.
This wasn't good. Definitely not good.
Lee was forced to look at 3 disgusting creatures of Light standing in front of him with smug faces. One of them, whose name probably was Magnus or something, stepped closer to her and rolled her over with his boot. Lee couldn't hold the boiling anger inside and raised his gun. Magnus jumped back barely missing the bullet that ended in a nearby tree, breaking its once smooth surface. Shaking hand dropped and his heaving chest was threatening to rip the new leather jacket that Darnelle made him buy a few weeks ago. Magnus only smirked at his enemy's emotional reaction.
Why emotional? It's because demons had no emotions or feelings, their hearts were filled with poison which could kill if got into your blood-system. At least that was a theory of angels.
The tall blonde man slowly walked forward with his head high and chin raised, meeting the furious eyes of Lee. Steal grey eyes met ruby red eyes. Cold ice met blazing fire.
"It looks like we showed up in time to see you filth feeding," he spat on Lee's boot and smirked at him, daring to hit his porcelain coloured face. Lee didn't need approval or an invitation. His rock hard fist was about to reach Magnus's nose, when he caught it with his hand.
"Disgusting, rotten, untouchable - that's who you all are. Your race of pests and rodents. The world needs to be cleansed from you beasts!" he ended shouting and Lee used his chance to kick Magnus in the chin with his foot. The hit was so strong that it sent the angel flying 10 feet in the air. His comrades didn't move and just stud around quietly, watching and not interfering.
"What? Are you scared of me? Am I too much for you to handle?" Lee growled as Magnus hit the ground and was whipping dirt and blood off his face. He slowly stud up and startled Lee with his laughing. He laughed and laughed, filling the night air with unease suspense.
"Aha ha ha...ahw. Did you really think that we came to fight you? Did you expect us to jump out, put handcuffs on your little wench and take her to court?!" Magnus's hysterical laughs irritated Lee only more, but he couldn't understand what he was talking about.
"You never stop to amaze me you moronic creatures. No wonder you all end up dead." Magnus calmed down a bit as he stud up and faced Lee once again. "No, we didn't come here to kill you or her. At least not yet. "
"Then why are you here, bastards!" Lee snapped at them and received a reply only from Magnus. He was the leader of this squad, he did all the talking.
"We're on a mission and while on our way we sensed the Cry. The Protocol obliges us to find the human and dispose of their soul before unwanted leaches suck it out." He threw a disinterested look at the corpse under the tree and sighed.
"And since we're not needed here anymore, I suppose he'll be taking our leave." Lee grunted back with his eyes locked on every move the angels made or were about to make.
"Then why did you shot Darnelle, if your part is only to take the soul?" He asked with gritted teeth. Magnus turned around and raised his hand, motioning for them to leave.
"Just wanted to torture someone, especially if that wench deserved it." He laughed just before they disappeared, leaving Lee pissed off beyond possible standing in the Darkness. A wail brought his attention to Darnelle who was trashing on the ground with her eyes rolled into her head and skin turning purple.
"Damn it!!" He cursed under his breath because he knew what was the poison they used on her, but also knew that there was nothing he could do to help her.
Because the Regretable Memory poison was desighned just for that purpose. To make you see the most horrible memories of your life that you regret and Lee had a clue what was Darnelle going through right now. The end of her life as a human. The day when she became one of them - a demon.
