"Hi, welcome to Starbucks. What can- Oh,hey Blaire." The boy across the counter at the small coffee shop looked up from the cash register to see his friend. Blaire smiled softly at his ignorance. He grinned sheepishly back at her. "What will it be today?"
She lowered her gaze to the green counter. "I'm not thirsty at the moment, but a friend who will listen would be nice." The boy barely caught what she had whispered, but he got the gist of it by watching her actions.
"Follow me." He motioned Blaire around the counter, and into a small break room. Poking his head out the door, he called to his co-worker, then came back in and sat down across the table from the quite girl.
The room stayed silent for what seemed a year and a day, before Blaire turned to look at the boy.
"I... I can't take all the stress at school any more. It's been two months and I don't want to deal with it all... Lila isn't any help. I don't know where to turn for help other than you..." He continued to look at her face, waiting for her to go on. "Promise you... you won't tell? Especially my mom, she would freak."
He studied her expressions, watching as confusion, anger, desperation, and, the most dominate, pain all mixed in her dark eyes. "Unless I really need to." She nodded and looked away. Then slowly pushed the shoulder of her shirt down so her shoulder was exposed. He closed his eyes and turned his head.
The red lines screamed at him, and he felt like the lines were on him as well.
"Why?"
She shrugged and pulled the clothing back into place.
"I have no other place to turn. My grades have dropped and my dad is angry about that, so he is being... more harsh." He swallowed hard as tears shined in her eyes. "Lila doesn't care, all she cares about is that I 'need' a boyfriend, and doesn't care that I'm hurting and desperate."
Silence filled the room and he worked through what to say in his mind.
"I'm hurt for you," She heard him finally. "I'm sorry that you have to deal with all this. I'm sorry that you feel alone in this, but you're not; I'm here. I'll talk to Lila, she has no right to dictate if you should have a boyfriend. And if she can't get that through her stubborn mind of her's..."
Blaire's eyes widened at the thought;she knew what he meant. Lila and him had been together for a year and a half, but over the two months previous, Lila had become more of a self-centered, selfish monster that Blaire hated to be around.
"Dare," She looked at him in the eye when he called her that; it was a special nickname only he knew of. He had mis-heard her when she first said her name, and it had stuck. "I'm here for you, and you can tell me anything. Ok?"
"Ya, ok." She wiped away the tears on her cheeks, and smiled a bit. "I'm thirsty now. Can I get something?"
"Yes, and it's on me." He said standing up. She stood up and went to him to be enveloped her in a huge hug. She layed her head on his chest.
"Thanks. Where would I be without you?"
"Not here at Starbucks probably." The two laughed quietly. "Com'on, let's go get you your drink. What will it be today?" He asked as they walked back out to the coffee machines and flavour pumps.
