It's Not Always Good BYE (Toby McDonough) (#Wattys2017)

Chapter 1: It's Been A While

It's late October and fall break is in, what, two weeks. I was excited! It is finally lunch time, I mean lunch at 11:30 is pretty good if you asked me. My friend, Olivia, and I walked to the cafeteria from our fourth period which was all the way at the other end of the school.

"Kaela," Olivia said finally after a minute or two of dead silence, "what are we getting for lunch?"

I answered like I normally do, "I have no clue. What do you want?" I always either got hot food or pizza, well cheese sticks, and she always gets a chicken sandwich. So, I have no clue why she even bothers asking.

We went into our normal lunch line and then found our way to the table we always sat at. My friend, Gentri sat in the chair that was next to mine. "Hey you, long time no see!" We literally saw each other that morning, but I said it just for the heck of it.

"Hey!" She replied back. "Guys guess who's back at school?" She exclaimed in my ear, "you know who he is Kaela!"

I thought about it for literally thirty seconds and recommended she just told us and she refused until "I" guessed. So I simply said, "I don't know,... Kayden?"

"No," she said with a giggle, "Toby McDonough! Toby got in last night!"

I couldn't believe it. Toby was back, he's back from tour earlier than expected. She started to gasp and chuckle and say stuff under her breath. Her eyes got REAL big too. I asked what she was looking, more like staring, at and she told me to turn around. When I did so, I bumped heads with somebody who was really close in my general area.

"Ou-ouch," I said to myself, "I'm so so sorry!" I exclaimed. I still didn't know who it was.

"It was my fault," a familiar voice said to me. I heard Olivia and Gentri laughing from behind me and I turned around and they quickly stopped. "So how have you been my beautiful Model?" he asked.

Only one person has ever called me his so called Model. And that was Toby.

"I can't believe you're back! I thought you weren't comin' home 'til  December?"

"Well," he started when the mean girls showed up. I mean they wear pink all the time and they're just like the girls in the movie. It's awful!

"Well hello Toby!" she interrupted. "How was your tour?"

"Great and really fun. Thanks for asking. I was in the middle of saying something though Maddie." he didn't say it in a rude way though but with force I guess.

She replied with a simple "yeah OK I guess I'll talk to you soon then." She walked and snapped at her clique I guess you'd call it.

"You were saying Soldier?" Model and Soldier are nicknames taken from two of his, well his and his brothers, songs. He was my Soldier and I was his Model.

"Well long story short, I missed my super Model, but we finished tour early. We did a show and meet and greet once a night but then that changed from one to two shows and meet and greets a night."

"You must be tired," I asked him when he finally sat down. He had gotten the same thing I did: Chicken Strips, Mac&Cheese, Green Beans, and a Roll and Pudding.

"I am, but it's been a while since I've seen my girl!"
