I glanced over at her. She lay back in her seat, sprawled over the edges with her limbs hanging. Her head was tilted back and eyes closed. How could she be so calm, I wondered. Without a care in the world.
“Promise me, okay C?” She swung forwards abruptly. Her eyes flashed open. As always I was drawn to them. Blue, clear, swirling depths. Like a whirlpool. The thought was so cliché it made me cringe inwardly. After all this time we spent together, the time I spent lost in her eyes, all I could think of was whirlpool? There had to be better things. The colour of the ocean when we went on a sailing trip together. Cliché, still, but more personal. Bright, focused. Alert. And currently locked on me. “Promise me.”
“I promise.” The words stuck in my throat. I forced them out like bile.
Almost imperceptibly, she changed again. The slope of her shoulders relaxed. Her eyes still glowed. She drew back into her chair slightly. Calm once more.
“You have to remember this, C.” She took my hand and it was fire. I was torn between pulling away and letting her engulf me. Did she feel this too? How could she bear it? “It’s okay to be sad sometimes. But you have to hold things that are good, you have to hold them to your heart.” She placed my hand on her chest, holding me there. Freezing me in place. “If you keep the good things then you’ll be happy. Don’t focus on the bad things. You have to remember the good things. Remember happy times and it’ll make you happy.”
She smiled and stood. I stood with her, automatically, her still holding my hand. She died the next day.
