Hollering.

Cheering.

Screaming

Those were the sounds I heard as I raced towards the familiar salty water.

My heart was pounding hard against my chest as my adrenaline coursed rapidly through my veins pushing me, willing me, to go faster. I had never before felt so free and so alive.

A wide smile crossed my face as the cool ocean water splashed upon my body causing shivers to climb up my spine form the sudden contact. I threw myself down on my surfboard, crashing down onto the water's surface, and began to paddle as fast as I could against the ocean current.  The other competitors were a mere blur to me as my mind began to hone in to the one thing that mattered most to me: the waves.

My breathing was picking up quickly the further I paddled from the shore. My excitement grew bigger with every breath I took in. This was what I was mean to do! Surfing had become such an important part of my life every since I was a little girl and it had been the only thing keeping me going when having to cope with a poor excuse of a father. Surfing made my burdens lighter and my life simpler. It was as if I was born to be on the ocean...

"Calypso..." A distant, whispery voice echoed through the ocean breeze.

The airy voice broke me out of my surfing trance almost instantly, startling me. I stopped paddling and sat up on my board as the waves rocked me back and forth. As I looked around me, I noticed an alarming sight. Not only was I very far from shore, but the other competitors were no longer in sight. My sea blue eyes frantically searched around in confusion. How the heck did I end up so far? I hadn't been paddling more than just a few minutes...

"Calypso..." The voice echoed again through the breeze, only it seemed closer and much more sinister than before. I swallowed hard, not knowing what to do. What could I do, anyways? I was far from land and stranded out in super deep water with nothing more than a surfboard to protect me. If someone was coming for me, I'd pretty much be screwed.

"Who are you?" I shouted to the wind, craning my neck in all sorts of directions to try and spot the source to this mysterious whisper.

A loud chuckle sounded from all around me, almost as if I was in a closed room with reflective walls. I instantly threw my hands around my ears to try and block out that horrendous laughter. It was demonic...Evil. It sounded as if it wanted to hurt me.

"I'm coming for you, my dear..." It said quietly as if it was right next to me. I screamed.

My eyes flew open. My breathing was hard and little droplets of sweat beaded my forehead. I sat up slowly, feeling a strong headache coming on. Sighing slowly, I rubbed my tired eyes and ran a hand through my tangled sandy blond hair in an attempt to calm my troubled nerves.

What the heck was that?...

It had been awhile since I've had a bad dream. And of course it would come the day of my huge surfing competition... What on earth could've caused it? Probably my nerves... It had to be since I was feeling anxious about today.

Glancing at my clock, I noticed that it was 5:34 in the morning....

Groaning loudly, I fell back onto my pillow out of frustration.

"Of all days to feel restless, it just had to be this one..." I moaned knowing very well that I wasn't going to be able to fall back asleep.

Calypso...
