[Ebony]

"Hold still." I bit my lip as my mother's rough hands weaved a braid out of my hair. She pulled hard on my hair making my head tilt. She snapped another nasty comment about me and I sat in silence, not bothering to think of a good come back.

This was my daily life in the oh so lovely village of Duskshire. My parents didn't want me. To be more specific, they didn't want a baby girl. When my parents had first went to the doctor, he had told them that they were having a boy. A lovely baby boy. They were in for a shock when out came me- a girl. The cute little baby boy that they had imagined was no where to be seen. Whoops, I guess I was born to the wrong family.

Sure they certainly weren't the worst parents in the village, but they weren't the best. They didn't hit me, they didn't really yell- all they did was nothing. They shut me out of their life and that was the end of it.

Till one week ago.

Every five years a family had to send their eldest son or daughter to the demon. The vampire who haunted the villagers. Hundreds of years ago, the villagers mayor had been out with his best friends family off to trade goods with the neighboring village. On their way back, the demon struck. The mayors best friend had been killed but the demon had kept the mayor alive to send a message to the people. That was to send every man, woman and army after him to try and defeat him.

We were very stupid back then, no correction, they. We actually thought that we had a fighting chance. My bad, they. The mayor sent an army of soldiers, the best of the best to go and defeat this monster. A few days later one soldier, came back out of the hundreds. This soldier, battered and terrified explained that everyone was dead. He also had a message from the demon himself.

Try again. Perhaps hire a stronger group of men.

By now the mayor realised that they could not defeat the creature by strength so he went to the witch. The witch went by the name Georgia Carandell. She lived on the very edge of the woods, isolated from sociaity. Many people called her mad, but the mayor was desprate. He went to find her, and when he did he begged for her help.

Georgia was a tricky witch. She refused to take down the devil, only to help defend the village. Having no other choice, the mayor agreed. Georgia put a spell on the village so that all evil could not enter.

Furious by this decision, the demon waited. And waited. After a few years, the mayor thought that the devil lingered no longer. He was wrong. The second he walked out, demon took hold of him.

Just when the mayor thought that it was all over for him, the demon offered a deal.

"Every Five years I want a different family to offer their eldest child."

Five stood for the number of years the demon had waited for the mayor. The mayor, a cowardly man, agreed to this.

Now thanks to the mayor who lived hundreds of years ago, I was about to be sent to my death. I remember the exact moment when my families name was called. That bittersweet moment. I was happy that I could finally leave this place, yet of course I was leaving as a sacrifice.

"Ebony, their outside." My mother said in a rather intimidating voice. I looked out the window to see two men, in police uniforms standing outside stiffly. I stood up, stiffly walking to the door. As I opened it, I raised my chin proudly. I was finally getting out of this stupid village.

"We're here to escort Ebony Pierce." They said coldly. I leaned to one side, my eyes narrowing.

"That'd me." I muttered. Instantly they sprang into action, their large hands grabbing my shoulders and arms and pulling me away. I didn't struggle but I turned my head to my parents staring blankly out the window.

I gulped as we approached the walls. These walls that were enchanted with ancient magic. As soon as we exited those walls, we'd be as good as dead.

The men opened the huge gates with a push of a button. The gates creaked, before coming to a stop. I shuddered as the men hauled me over.

It was like slow motion to me. The horrifying reality that I was going to die set in the moment my foot touched the other side. My heart beat faster and faster as they continued to take me deeper into the forest. My mind spun at the possibilities.

"Don't do this," I tried to reason. I hadn't been this nervous before, not even when they announced that the Pierce family had to sacrifice their eldest.

The men didn't even show any signs that they had heard my panicked plea. Instead they stared ahead, expressions blank. They didn't even break their pace.

"Let go of me!" I tried again. No use. I gulped as the wind hit my face, making me flinch. They weren't letting go.

I could do this, I told myself. I was Ebony Pierce, I'd been through lots. I could handle two men, no matter how muscular they were.

I sprang to action, it was now or never. I yanked myself out of their surprised hands. Just moments ago I had been dragging along. I bolted to the side, not wasting time to look back. I didn't have time.

My insincts told me not to go deeper into the forest but I had no choice. Where else would I go? Home? Not a chance, I had no home. I was on my own, no friends, no family. I ran through the forest weaving through the many trees. My breaths came in pants but I kept going. I couldn't stop, I couldn't risk getting caught.

I ran for what seemed like hours yet only minutes had passed by. I finally collapsed, unable to go further without a break. I laid motionless on the ground, my eyes closed and breaths coming in gasps.

The sound of the wind russling leaves somehow soothed me. Back in the village, I'd never been able to enjoy the world like this. Even the sound of wind and the feeling of it fascinated me. That was all I had at the moment after all.

My fingers curled around the grass. Don't get me wrong, there was plently of grass in the village. Yet this was the first time that grass seemed special. So interesting. I'd never been interested in nature before, not till now.

I felt free.

That was till a hand was placed over my mouth. My eyes opened as I tried to spring to my feet. Panic spread through me. There was only one person who dared to enter these forests and that person wasn't exactly a person. It was a demon.

Instead of seeing a visious devil hovering over me, I saw a man. Somewhere around my age, the boy was handsome. His jade eyes searched my face as he licked his rosy lips. His brown curly hair hung over parts of his face as he peered down at me.

I stared at him in awe. Something about him was so fascinating. Was it his curly hair? His green eyes? His rosy lips? I didn't know but over the fear that clung onto me, all I could feel was fascination.

The fear didn't come till he smiled, exposing fangs. Fear consumed me as he bit down on my neck.
