Its been a month now and I have not talked to Elisabeth since I left for training. and she was mad because she thought the reason I joined was to keep people in chains if only she knew.i still write to her from the camp set up just outside town I'm set to move out soon to north Carolina. I'm really not ready to move from Virginia but it's direct orders from president Davis himself.

I went to say good bye to everyone back home before I left I also went to Elisabeth house and told I was leaving she gave me a big hug and a kiss then said " please come back to me alive" I will try.

Just another day in Carolina always in danger of an attack from the union or "the northern boyz" as the other soldiers call them. There is a rumor that we will march into battle tomorrow morning little did I know I was going to see so much blood.

*Tomorrow August, 28,1861

It appears the rumor was true we are marching into battle this should be easy right?. Commanding officer: forward! March! As we march we start to get shelled by union artillery commanding officer: hold! Hold the line! We have lost about 150 men already but this is the risk we take as we march further we see union regulars. Commanding officer: Halt! First rank kneel! Make ready! Take aim! Fire!
