***This poem was inspired by a movie about a blind girl that I saw. (It was a thriller called The Village, but that's beside the point.) I wrote it about two years ago and decided it needed to be published. It's mostly free verse, but there are some near rhymes, too.
I feel the mist descending
As I sit here in the forest.
I may be blind, but I can see
The blackness closing in on me.
I see the greyness of the fog,
I see the yellowish color of the moon.
But you call me blind
Because I can't see you.
I see more than you'll ever see.
I see more than you'll ever know.
The absence of my vision was only an obstacle
That I've already overcome.
I see the works of colorful imagination.
I can almost see the sounds I hear.
I have already seen the beautiful moon,
But you call me blind
Because I can't see you.
When I feel nothingness, I see it.
When I trace intricate sculptures with my finger
I see the beautiful art.
When I feel the rough bark of an old tall tree
And I pick up one of it's leaves,
It becomes clear as day to me.
When I lift my head to the sky at night,
I see the beautiful shining of the moon.
But you call me blind,
Because I can't see you.
I may not be able to see your smile.
I may not be able to see your face.
I may not be able to see the color of your hair or skin,
But I see everything that's inside of you.
I see your spirit,
I see your kindness.
I see everything you've kept locked away.
I look deep into your soul and I see the reflection of the moon,
But you still call me blind
Because I can't see you.
I know you more than you know yourself.
I've seen more of you than you'll ever know about yourself.
I know all of the deep, dark secrets that you keep.
When you come close, I know it's you.
I will always stand by your side.
Together we will look at the moon,
And someday you'll understand that I'm not blind
Just because I can't see you.
