"Kick their asses, girl. Show them the awesome you," Mon shouted as I got out of the car.
"You do know that it's my first day at work right?" I retorted as I closed the door.
"So?" she asked changing the radio station.
"Nothing, bye. And thanks for the ride." I said turning to face the building I was supposed to work in. I could hear her car as it speeded down the road. I smiled lightly thinking of Mon and her rash ways. She was a car racer and a fierce woman. She loved her car more than anything, even her boy friend Ryan knew that.
I walked into the building with my heart beating erratically. The call letter told me to meet Mr.Miller, whose office was on the twentieth floor.
"Umm....Mr.Miller?" I said to the blonde receptionist. She was searching frantically for something in one of the bottom draws.
"Yes, this is his office," she said standing upright, smoothing the wrinkles in her gray pencil skirt with one hand and the other tugging the few strands of hair that had escaped from her classy bun. "Oh, you are that new recruit, Miss Evans, right?" I nodded my head in response. "Well he is waiting for you inside," she said pointing to the dark brown door behind her.
"Thanks," I replied just as she went back to her frantic hunting mode. I opened the door after knocking it and getting a response. It had window planes facing the Chicago skyline, which brought the bright sunlight that lit up the whole room. There was no need for lights in this room. There was a man, maybe in his late forties or early fifties, sitting behind a dark wood desk.
"Miss Evans?" The man asked, as I stood near the door looking at his office.
"Yes sir," I replied back in a professionally clipped tone. He gestured me to sit across him in one of the chairs as he set aside the file that he was reading from on his desk. I handed him my resume and sat in silence as he read through it. I just wished that I looked presentable enough with my hair not windswept as I had put the windows down in the car as the AC wasn't working. I'm sure he had read my profile already as I had the appointment order with me but I guess this was some of kind of protocol to follow. I waited patiently as I had all the time in this world.
"So Miss Evans-"
"Please call me Nora,"
"-Nora, you have an excellent resume here and I am sure they have already spoken to you about your salary and the job. So any questions?"
"None sir,"
"Well then welcome to Infotech," he said reaching out to shake my hands. He briefed me about the job and asked Kelly, another employee to show me around the company.
"Hi, I am Kelly Rowan, Senior software engineer and you might be," she trailed off.
"Nora Evans, I am a coder," I said. Kelly looked like she was in her late twenties, with short brown hair and a permanent dimple in her right cheek. Her gold band in her left ring finger twinkled every time the sun fell on it.
"Oh, so you must be the one replacing Clark on Jeff's team," I halted in my steps as she said it. "Oh no, I didn't mean that you are taking his place or anything, he got a job in Silicon Valley so he went there. He was a coder in Jeff's team and so I thought you will be filling in." She was explaining it all like she was talking to a little kid and trying to make me feel not guilty but the reason for my hesitation was totally different.
She introduced me to many of the employees there and and at last let me sit in my little cubicle. She was a great woman, chatty as hell, but not the annoyingly chatty type.
Around mid-day I went to the cafeteria to grab a quick bite but Kelly forced me to sit with her friends and her so I ended up eating and gossiping with the ladies though it was them who gossiped while all I did was listen. Kelly waved to someone behind me and motioned them join us. The person stood right behind me as I could feel the warmth radiating of their skin.
"She's the one I told you about, Nora," Kelly said pointing towards me.
"Oh, hey. I'm Jeff. Kelly says that you are the new coder and you are to join my team" the person standing behind me said with a rough edge to his voice.
Oh God, why is this happening to me? Why do you torture me so?
