"No, I don't want to!"
"Yes, you do, you just don't know." She said moving to stand in front of the TV.
"I'm twenty five. I'm pretty sure I know what I want and what I don't want." I said exasperated.
"That's what I'm telling you. You are twenty five, in the prime of your life. Go out, shop, drink, have an one night stands, enjoy." Her eyes pleading, with pity.
"I am enjoying. This is my way of enjoying." I said trying to convince her, in vain.
"What sort of a girl gives up free shopping?" She asked fighting a losing battle.
"And what sort of a mum encourages her daughter to have an one night stand?" I said countering her.
"The type of mom that has confidence in her daughter. That she wouldn't do anything stupid." She said walking towards me. "Honey, I know that-"
"Mom, it's not about him. I'm tired, work and stuff, it's just stressful that all I want to do is to tuck myself in a cozy blanket and watch TV and sleep. I want to rest, please." She looked into my eyes, I'm not sure what she was looking for, but she at last sighed and sat next to me.
"I'm sorry, I promise I'll take you out tomorrow," I said resting on my head on her shoulder. I felt guilty. She surprised me last night. She and dad were supposed to come next month, but she came yesterday saying she needed to spend some quality time with me. We both know that she was here to check how I was coping but neither of us told it out loud.
"Don't be sweety, you sleep now," she said patting me lightly on my shoulders which always calmed me down and made me sleepy.

I woke up to the smell of pancakes and coffee. I walked to the kitchen to find mum singing along to the song as she made pancakes. Monica had gone to her boyfriend's place for the weekend. So mom and I had the place for ourselves for the weekend.
"Morning," I greeted as I poured a cup of coffee. Mom smiled back at me as she continued to sing and cook.
"So what do you want to do today?"
"Anything," she said placing a stack of pancakes on the table.

I and mum were walking back from the restaurant. She said she wanted to walk back to the apartment as the night was lovely. We shopped at the mall and watched a movie. I realised just then how long it had been since I watched a movie in a theatre or ate a restaurant. Mon and I usually order take out, even before I came here I had stopped going out. It felt nice for once to go and just......enjoy.
Jeff and I used to go to the theatre to watch plays. He used to like the broadway and off-broadway plays. He had wanted to become an actor, but never pursued that dream of his. He had been in the drama club during his high school days. He knew many plays by heart and his most favourite was Macbeth. He could speak hours and hours on that.
"What are you thinking about?" Mum asked bringing me back to reality. I was transported to the days when Jeff used to walk by my side while we were walking back to my apartment or his after watching a play or after dinner. We could speak about everything and nothing, all at once.
"Nothing," I replied, looking at the moon. It was big and bright but covered by clouds. Not a star was in sight.
"I know you are still not yet over him," mom started. I wanted to stop her but I knew she would talk anyways. "I know that if I say 'everything will be alright' nothing will be fixed. It's bullshit and we both know it," she took my hand in hers as I let the tears fall. I had cried many times but still it hurts to know that he is not by my side.
"You need to move on, you can't keep hurting yourself. This is life sweety, you must be strong. You can't go on like this. I'm sure he will want you to be happy."
"I can't believe he isn't here. We both knew it from the start, but we thought we had a little more time, mom. It was too soon," I said crying harder. My words tumbling over each other. Mom held me as I cried onto her shoulders.
"That's how life is......unexpected "
