It's remarkable how someone can know you from the inside out, even when you don't know this person just yet. The summer I had to stay with my dad was the summer ill never forget. Slumber parties, Fourth of July parties, and summer romances, a summer full of adventure, and heart ache. The moment I met my new best friend was the moment my life became something. Something exciting and wonderful that ill never forget..
April eighteenth of 09, the day I've been waiting for all year long. I finally turned eighteen and I was free at last. I got up at 6:45 to get ready for my birthday. I had out a pretty black mesh dress I got from Nordstrom's just the day before. I pranced myself down the hall to the bathroom. I slowly got all my bathroom stuff together in order and started the shower water.
I kept singing happy birthday to myself the whole time I was getting ready. A permanent smile was plastered on my face as I put up my long curly brown hair. I pinned up one side and let the rest of my hair stay down. I pinned a beautiful black flower on the bobby pins that I had in my hair. When I was finished with my hair I started on my make up. A little bit of shadow and thin lines of eye liner. I finished with a light cover of bronzer on my cheeks. I couldn't be any happier then what I was feeling at that moment.
I slowly slipped on my peep toed black suede heels and grabbed my cell phone and ipod before I ran down stairs. The kitchen table was set with a delectable breakfast. All my favorites were there. I sat down at the table and grabbed a plate. I started to scoop up some scrabbled eggs but was quickly bombarded. I got the air knocked right out of me.
"Happy birthday Aiyana!" My corky little sister Addison gave me a hug.
She sat down next to me and grabbed a plate. I sat there for a minute to catch my breath before I started to make my plate again. My beautiful mother walked into the room. Some say I am the spitting image of her, but really all she gave me was her long curly hair and her brown eyes. She always had a glow to her, even when she was down and out. I envied her in so many ways but was glad that I was her daughter.
She is a waitress at a local diner, and on her free time she would play her guitar for us. She once told me she wanted to be a singer when she was my age but after she had me all her dreams went out the window. I always wanted to see how people would respond to her wonderful voice. She had a mixture of Judy Garland and a little of Cheryl Crow. I guess she made a homemade CD back in high school but she couldn't find it after we moved from Iowa.
When she had Addison I was eleven. That's when the family was still together. My father, a business man that got tired of his everyday living, soon divorced my mom and moved away. Now he has a new wife in Montana, they live on a reservation next to there community center. I've only been to his house once or twice in the last three years, but I didn't care. Brenda, my father's new wife, had two kids from her previous marriage. A nineteen year old daughter and a seventeen year old son, I don't remember there names but then again I only met them once.
We now live in glorious Minnesota, where the summers are hot and the winters are terrible. I finished school early, but still had to go at least three days a week for half the day. I usually ended up staying the whole day, only because I didn't have anything else to do. I work at a gas station on the out skirts of town the nights were slow but the weekends were always busy. Lakeville was busy enough to keep my pockets full and hope high at all times.
I sat there at the table silently eating. Addison was already done and outside already. As I picked at my sausage, I constantly looked at my cell phone screen. Hoping that someone would text or call at any minute. I mean come on did people not know it was my birthday? I was talking about it almost the whole month before my big day.
"Aiyana, sweetie I have to go to work today" my mom kissed my forehead.
"What? I thought you were taking it off to spend time with me today" I let the sausage that I was picking at drop to the plate.
