While Tonks was at Hogwarts she began feeling very sick. Even Professor Snape could tell she was not at her best. Her roommates were very concerned. So they sent her to Madame Pomphrey. The healer found nothing magically wrong with her but a quick once over confirmed the poor witches fears. She was pregnant.
In this time there was still bias on being pure blooded. She couldn't stand the thought of her baby growing up in her world.
So she told Lawrence that she was being forced to divorce him and give up her baby. She asked him to take care of it when he or she was born. He immediately agreed.
